The Commissioner for Works, Ralph Nwosu, earlier today embarked on an unscheduled inspection tour of three critical ongoing infrastructure projects within the Owerri metropolis. The projects inspected include:
1. Reconstruction and rehabilitation of Douglas Road
2. 11-story Imo Internal Revenue Service Building
3. Mbari/Ikenegbu/MCC Junction Road
The unannounced visit allowed the Commissioner to carry out on-the-spot assessments of work quality, compliance with project specifications, and adherence to delivery timelines.
During the tour, he commended the overall quality of ongoing works and expressed satisfaction that visible progress is being recorded despite the challenges associated with urban construction.
At Douglas Road, one of the busiest commercial corridors in the state capital, the Commissioner noted the advanced stages of construction and recalled that the road was in a deplorable state before the current intervention, with failed sections and poor drainage causing severe hardship to commuters, motorists, and business owners. He stated that with the ongoing reconstruction, Douglas Road will undergo a redefined facelift that will ease traffic congestion, stimulate economic activity, and restore its status as a major artery in Owerri.
At the 11-story Imo Internal Revenue Service Building, the Commissioner inspected structural works and internal fittings currently underway. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of execution, stating that the project is progressing appreciably. He highlighted the building’s strategic role in expanding the state’s revenue base and providing a conducive, modern facility for staff and taxpayers alike.
While visiting the Mbari/Ikenegbu/MCC Junction Road, where asphalt laying is currently in progress, the Commissioner charged the contractor to sustain quality construction and ensure that all materials meet approved standards for durability. He added that the government will not accept substandard delivery on any project funded with public resources.
The unscheduled inspection visit by the Commissioner underscores the Ministry of Works’ commitment to proactive supervision, transparency, and accountability in project delivery. It reflects the Ministry’s resolve to guarantee value for money and ensure that projects are completed within agreed timelines.
Addressing journalists at the end of the inspection tour, the Commissioner seized the opportunity to appeal to road users and residents to bear with the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing works. He urged motorists to maintain designated alternative routes pending the completion of the projects, assuring that the short-term disruptions will give way to long-term benefits.
Ralph Nwosu further reiterated State Government’s unwavering commitment to improving sustainable infrastructure across Imo State. He affirmed that the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma remains focused on delivering legacy projects that will stand the test of time, enhance urban renewal, and directly impact the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.
