The conference, which is being organized by the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN), Imo State Chapter, aims to tackle surrounding issues on hate speech and fake news.
Speakers expected at the conference include Mrs Nneamaka Okafor, Special Adviser to Imo Governor on Electronic & New Media; Ikechukwu Anyanwu, Chairman, Imo OMPAN/Publisher Arise Africa Magazine and Emeh James Anyalekwa, National President, OMPAN/Executive Director Igbere TV.
Others are Mike Ikem Umealo, CEO Seven Eleven Easy Life, USA; Ify Onyegbule, Host Daily Report; Nneota Egbe, Presenter Channels Television, Amb. Prince Ukwu CEO New Media Galaxy/OMPAN Sec., and ThankGod Emeh, CEO News Corner Media, PRO OMPAN.
In a statement, the Convener and Chairman of Imo OMPAN, Ikechukwu Anyanwu said the conference which ought be a physical meeting now holds online via Zoom App “in respect to government and experts safety directives of physical and social distancing and ban on large gathering”, in the wake of coronavirus.
Anyanwu expressed worry over the high rate of fake news and the immediate dangers it poses on the society, saying, ”it is high time new media users learnt the rules hence the conference.”
The statement partly reads, “In a fierce fight to conquer fake news and hate speeches that has characterized the Nigerian society and world at large especially the blogosphere or new media space, the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria, OMPAN, Imo State Chapter has taken the bull by the horn to hold a nationwide Webinar on Sunday May 31, 2020 to squarely treat New Media Journalism and the way forward in Nigeria.
“The i-Media Virtual Conference which features sound speakers and media personnel will look at the issues, menace and dangers as well as the expected roles of actors of online media practice.”
