The Ezeagbogu central school in Ezinihitte local government area of Imo State on January 6th, 2021 witnessed the presence of great sporting personalities and personalities in the society in general as the maiden edition of IKUKUOMA MBAISE UNITY CUP came to an end in a much attended football match.
The local school field was filled to the brim with more than 5000 enthusiastic spectators as Okpofe/Ezeagbogu FC threaded tackles with Okirika Nweke FC which ended in a lone goal in favour of Okpofe/Ezeagbogu FC with a smooth second half goal by \’Old Man\’.
The former Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON was on ground to watch the final as he performed the official presentation of trophy and medals to the victorious team.
The Federal government was also represented as the President\’s SA on Sports – Daniel De-Bull Amokachi was on ground to perform the official kick off ceremony.
Other dignitaries included a Nigerian Olympic gold Medalist and an assistant commissioner of police in Lagos State, ACP Chioma Ajunwa whose foundation partnered with IKUKUOMA foundation to put up the tournament among others.
Tijani Babangida, also an ex international and the president of Nigeria Professional Football Union was also visibly present.
In his welcome address, the chairman and the founder of IKUKUOMA FOUNDATION – High Chief Dr. Summers Vitus Nwokie (Aka Jị Ikuku 1) said part of the reason for the competition was \”enshrined in our resolve to key into the United Nation\’s agenda of using sports as a catalyst for community development\”.
Reiterating the resolve of the foundation to develop the youths via sports, he said it was part of the core reasons of merging with the Chioma Ajunwa Foundation to enable it \”use all manner of Sporting Activities To develop and nurture talented ones to greatness\” which will in turn ensure that the youths give no attention to illicit drugs and other form of social vices.
High Chief IKUKU sought \”for the partnership of the Federal ministry of youths and sports, State ministry of youths and sports as well as the Bureau of Sports Development\” and office of the president in achieving his lofty ideas in youths development with sports.
He specifically sought for an enabling environment from the government of all levels while seeking for land allocation to enable the foundation set up a state of the art stadium of FIFA standards with all sporting facilities which will be used in training and nurturing the youths who are interested in sports in the 36 states of the nation including the FCT.
High Chief Summers congratulated the winners of the competition and urged them to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship.
