A few concerned Nigerians in Ghana have raised alarm over a spate of fake news aimed at tarnishing the reputation and goodwill of Dr Emma Okeson, former patron of the All Nigeria Community Ghana (ANC-Gh) and CEO of Citylights Group. Recently, unsigned and unverified publications falsely accused Dr Okeson of fomenting discord among Nigerians and Ghanaians.
Dr Emma Okeson, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ANC-Gh, left a lasting legacy in Ghana through his outstanding contributions to community development, educational scholarships, and media support. His decade-long involvement significantly shaped the welfare and image of Nigerians living in Ghana until his voluntary withdrawal from community affairs.
Dr Okeson rose to prominence when he secured a suitable office space for ANC-Gh—an umbrella body representing nearly two million Nigerians in Ghana. Prior to this, the association operated from a cramped one-room office in Adabraka, Accra. His leadership led to the establishment of a proper secretariat nearly a decade ago, enhancing the community’s visibility and operational structure.
Beyond infrastructure, Dr Okeson supported Nigerian students in Ghana. In early 2020, he awarded cash grants to outstanding Nigerian students, including Fatihah Oluabukola Ayinde of Islamic University College and James Olabode of Knutsford University. These awards encouraged academic excellence among Nigerians studying abroad.
Dr Okeson also played a pivotal role in advancing Nigerian media platforms in Ghana, recognizing their role in shaping public perception. Since 2009, he supported outlets such as the Nigerian Eye Newspaper and Nigerian Times Newspaper. He also backed the popular Loaded Mama’s “Naija Levels” radio show, which helped to challenge negative stereotypes and uplift the image of Nigerians in Ghana.
Citylights Group, under his leadership, sponsored the first Miss Nigeria Ghana pageant and donated a brand-new Kia Picanto to the winner. This initiative, endorsed by the Nigerian High Commission, helped promote cultural ties and goodwill between the two nations.
Despite his numerous contributions, Dr Okeson stepped away from ANC-Gh and Igbo community leadership due to rising personal and professional commitments. Though the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Femi Abikoye, encouraged him to remain involved, he opted to reduce his engagement. While he still holds honorary respect, he is no longer active in decision-making or current matters.
Reflecting on his years of service, Dr Okeson remarked, “It has been a privilege to serve and uplift the Nigerian community in Ghana through tangible support and unwavering dedication.” He has completely distanced himself from the ongoing controversies, including the trending “Nigeria Must Go” protests in Ghana.
Dr Okeson’s legacy—establishing community infrastructure, supporting student scholarships, and promoting positive media narratives—remains visible and appreciated. Although no longer in active leadership, the Nigerian community continues to honor his impact and foundational contributions.
“These fake news campaigns are unsubstantiated and unfairly tarnish Dr Okeson’s reputation. He has nothing to benefit from the recent discord,” said Mr. Chris, a concerned ANC member. Other Nigerians have echoed this sentiment, urging the public to disassociate him from the ongoing unrest. They emphasized Dr Okeson’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s progress and unity, both at home and abroad.
In July 2011, the book *The Diaspora Nigerians Making Impact in Ghana*, featuring a foreword by then High Commissioner Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, was dedicated to Dr Okeson in recognition of his devotion to Nigeria’s image in Ghana.
In summary, Dr Emma Okeson is a respected former ANC leader whose legacy includes impactful service to Nigerians in Ghana. Given his early withdrawal from ANC affairs and clear absence from current controversies, linking him to the “Nigeria Must Go” protests is both unfounded and unfair. His commitment to Nigeria’s image remains unshaken, and many continue to call for his name to be preserved with the dignity it deserves.
