Arnold Schwarzenegger opens up about affair: \’It\’s always easy to be smart in hindsight\’

In 2011, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the talk of the town and his face was plastered all over magazines after it was revealed that he fathered a child outside of his marriage with the family housekeeper.
The former California Governor  admits he still thinks about the affair \”every so often.\”
The \”Apprentice\” host chatted with Men\’s Journal for the April issue about the affair that broke up his 25-year marriage to Maria Shriver.
\”And I can beat myself up as much as I want. It\’s not gonna change the situation,\” he said. \”So the key thing is, how do you move forward? How do you have a great relationship with your kids?\”
Arnold and Maria have four children together, but despite splitting in 2011, they still have yet to formally divorce — nor do they seem to be in any kind of hurry.

\”You can\’t go back,\” Schwarzenegger continued. \”If I could, in reality, be \’Terminator,\’ of course I would go back in time and would say, \’Arnold?…no.\’? You know, it\’s always easy to be smart in hindsight. That\’s not the way it works.\”
It took time, but Arnold has repaired his relationship with the kids he shares with Maria, as well as his newfound son, Joseph Baena, who is now 19 years old. Joseph, it was revealed, only found out the identify of his father in 2010 when he was 12 years old.

Last October, Arnold took to Twitter to praise his teenage son on his birthday.
\”Happy birthday, Joseph. Great student, great athlete. I\’m proud of you and I love you!,\” Arnold wrote.
In an interview with \”60 Minutes\” in 2012, Arnold was contrite while speaking about the affair and his children.

\”If you would have asked me 10 years ago, five years ago, two years ago, what is the most important thing in my life, I would tell you over and over, it\’s my marriage, it\’s my family,\” he said. \”So the thing that really meant the most to me kind of fell apart because of my doing. That is something that I will always look back and say, \’How could you have done that?

End of the Road for Vampire: dreaded kidnap kingpin, dies in gun battle with police

End of the Road for Vampire:  dreaded kidnap kingpin, dies in gun battle with police

OWERRI—THERE was jubilation yesterday in Imo State, when leader of the most dreaded kidnap gang in the country, Henry Chibueze, popularly called Vampire, was killed during a gun battle between his gang and opera-tives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT, in the early hours of yesterday, in Omu Awa Forest, Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State.

A police Sergeant attached to the IRT, Abia State, sustained multiple bullet wounds. Five suspected members of his gang, including his Second-in-Command, Obinna Elah, 26, a native of Orlu, Imo State, were arrested at the end of the gun battle.
Other suspects arrested were Arinze Abecheta, 24, from Ohafia in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area; Chukwu Ebuka Ikeazota, 23, from Ohohia village, Isiala Mbano area, both in Imo State; Samuel Ugochukwu, 24, from Ezisno village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and Clifford Aheana of Omu Awa village. Three of them, who sustained bullet wounds, are reportedly being treated at an undisclosed hospital, with the injured policeman. Several AK-47 rifles and a cache of ammunition and expended shells of bullets were recovered in the forest used by the kidnappers as hideout. Earlier rescued by members Recall that late Vampire was earlier arrested in 2015 and had been in prison custody, following the kidnap of the wife of a government official and was paraded by Department of State Services, DSS, before the state governor then, where he confessed to have carried out several kidnappings in the state and beyond before his arrest. After Chibueze’s escape in January, when his gang members spirited him away from the premises of an Owerri high court, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State announced a N5 million bounty for information that would lead to his arrest. Irked by the recklessness of the gang, the IG, Ibrahim Idris, directed the IRT to go on a massive manhunt for the notorious kidnap gang. Shootout Led by its Commander, Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, the team, as gathered, traced the kidnappers to a forest in Omu Awa in Ikwerre area of Rivers State. Police sources hinted that: “With Technical Intelligence Support from TIU, at about 1.30a.m. yesterday, Vampire, whose gang members have been responsible for the death of several Nigerians, was shot dead. “The arrested suspects confessed to have successfully rescued Vampire from the Imo high court in January. They also confessed to have executed four successful kidnappings after the rescue of their gang leader.” Paraded Parading Vampire’s partners in crime, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, a Chief Superintendent, disclosed that the exhibits recovered from the suspects included five AK-47 assault rifles, 300 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. He said charms were also recovered from the body of the deceased Vampire. According to Moshood, “if you recall, Vampire was rescued by his colleagues in crime at the Owerri High Court premises. The Inspector General’s special forces tracked him down to a village in the forest in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. “On sighting the police, they opened fire and exchange of gunfire ensued. Vampire was gunned down in the process. He had earlier confessed to the murder of his girlfriend, Sandra, and eight members of her family, including six children in Lagos State. “He alleged that his girlfriend stole his N45 million, share of N110 million ransom paid by the family of one of his victims in Omoku, Rivers State.” Vampire was also described as “a serial killer, who also confessed to have killed over 200 in various kidnappings and robbery attacks.” The Inspector General, Ibrahim Idris, who was in Lagos to flag off a bi-annual training of policemen yesterday, confirmed the arrest, stating that the Force would not rest on its oars until acts of criminality were checkmated in the country. Body paraded in Owerri Meanwhile, residents of Owerri in Imo State, went into jubilation yesterday, as the Imo State Police Command moved the lifeless body of Vampire round the major streets of the municipality. Traffic was held up for hours at several points in Owerri, as the police convoy glided through the ever busy Bank Road, Douglas Road, Wetheral Road and back to the State Police Headquarters. Residents’ reaction The show attracted a large crowd to the police premises. Some residents, who spoke to Vanguard, commended the police and other security agencies for not only going after the fleeing Vampire, but also silencing him for life and capturing his acolytes. Reacting to what he called “this cheering news,” an Owerri-based architect, Chief Amaugo Ugorji, commended the security agencies for “completing this wonderful operation in record time and for the good of the citizenry.” Ugorji reasoned that it would have been better to capture him alive, so as to get more information from the deadly hoodlum, adding that the police should ensure that they extract as much information from Vampire’s acolytes as possible. “This may ultimately lead to the arrest of other criminals, who are presently hiding in several states,” Ugorji said. A woman, speaking to Vampire’s lifeless body, said: “You killed my relatives. Look at you now; you will go to hell fire.” Another young man suggested that the police high command should promote all its personnel that took part in the operation, adding “that is one sure way to embolden and encourage others to serve diligently, patriotically and selflessly. “To some extent, we can now have a good sleep.”

Commitment: Wenger Rejects Barcelona, IDA rejects a lucrative offer to remain committed to Arise Afrika

Arsene Wenger says he would prefer to stay and focus on Arsenal rather than eyeing the vacant Barcelona job this summer. Wenger, in the final year of his contract at Arsenal, has been linked with succeeding Luis Enrique at the Nou Camp after the Spaniard announced his end-of-season exit in a shock revelation on Wednesday.

Arsenal’s failings this season have led to some calls for Wenger to move on — but he says his ‘preference has always been the same and will remain the same’. Wenger said: ‘I’m not looking for jobs in other clubs or jobs of other people. I just focus on me getting to the next level and trying to improve. ‘Competent managers always try to improve and see what they can do better and reinvent themselves — that’s what I try to do, that’s basically it. ‘I’ve been here for 20 years and many times had the opportunity to leave I don’t think I have to convince you that my preference has always been Arsenal.”

Prof Pat Utomi, Soludo, Igbo Leaders Speaks on Namdi Kanu

Release Kanu now, Soludo, Utomi, Igbo leaders tell Buhari
ABUJA—A Pan Igbo group, Nzuko Umunna, led by former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Professor Charles Soludo yesterday, told President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, saying the federal government must obey court orders even when such orders appeared unpalatable.
This came as the group claimed Nigeria was becoming a failed state, despite having the potential to be one of the most prosperous nations on earth. Other signatories to the statement, read by Prof. Soludo include; Profs. Chidi Odinkalu, Ebere Onwudiwe, Mr Law Mefor, Rev. Fr. Jude C.; Emeka Ugwu-Oju, Ferdinand Agu and Tony Nnadi. Others are Dr Sam Amadi, Mr Innocent Chukwuma, Collins Ugwu and Andy Wabali Addressing journalists in Abuja, Prof. Soludo said: “We demand for the urgent release of Nnamdi Kanu, his colleagues and all prisoners of conscience, as part of the process of the search for national cohesion and building a new Nigeria. There is a legitimate debate among Nigerians on the Biafra question, and there are indeed many Igbos who, like many other Nigerians, do not agree with Nnamdi Kanu’s objective or means. It needs to be stated, however, that no citizen of Nigeria deserves the kind of treatment meted to him and his colleagues. Government has declined to obey the orders of properly constituted courts in Nigeria for his release. Nnamdi Kanu is not above the law; but, nor should he be put beneath it.

”A situation where the state refuses to obey legitimate court orders for his release and holds him until it gets a favourable order; moves the goalposts endlessly through endless amendment of the charges against him; and now seeking to try him in secret clearly constitutes circumstances that would fall well short of the constitutional guarantees of due process. These also would raise questions about our country’s adherence to human rights, the rule of law and transparent judicial process. We worry that there is now a clear design to place Kanu beneath the law and basic constitutional guarantees of due process. Without the rule of law, no sustainable economic progress can take place. ”The treasonable felony charge, which is now levied against Nnamdi Kanu has previously been used against Joseph Tarka and Obafemi Awolowo. His trial reminds us of the travails of these historic figures in our country and, indeed, of the more recent military-era treason trial of President Obasanjo. Not many people believe that Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues can receive a fair trial based on the law. This makes Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues political prisoners or prisoners of conscience. “At various times in Nigeria’s history, it became expedient to release such prisoners (e.g. Obafemi Awolowo; Yakubu Gowon and Odumegwu Ojukwu, as well as President Obasanjo) as part of national reconciliation and nation-building. Nigeria is currently a country at war with itself. Our considered view is that, for taking extraordinary steps to draw international attention to Nigeria’s failing state and the urgency of actions, Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues deserve to be engaged and not to be held interminably as political detainees.” Agitation for self-determination, not a crime Flanked by Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr Udenta Udenta and other Igbo professionals, Soludo, said: “We demand that the right to freedom of association, assembly, peaceful protest, and expression must be accessible to all citizens of Nigeria as guaranteed by Nigeria’s constitution. Trying to criminalize anyone who talks about self-determination or attempts to use brute force to main and kill innocent protesters in a democracy is a strategy for a time that we no longer live in. This is 2017 and Nigeria is supposed to be a democracy! More than 200 years after 11 states in the US failed their secession bid, their Confederate flag still flies in several of them, even on government buildings. ”Since 2012, no less than 23 U.S. states had thousands of their citizens sign petitions to secede from the U.S. Currently, the State of California is still pressing for Calexit. There were protests all over the US following the election of Donald Trump. Similar examples can be cited in many democracies. But no one is killed, brutalized or incarcerated by the state. “As a people, we believe that our country is big enough for diverse voices to be heard in the confidence that these voices in their respective ways seek to correct our imperfections; to have a stake in constructing a more perfect union. We convey our thanks to the Federal Government and the Acting President, Prof. Osinbajo for reaffirming recently that citizens have the right to peaceful protest, and we are happy that protesters were allowed to express themselves in Lagos, Abuja and other venues recently under police protection. Soludo explained that the group was not self-serving but working for the interest of humanity, saying: “We are a delegation of the Nzuko Umunna, a Pan-Igbo group, whose members are individual professionals within Nigeria and the Diaspora, as well members/leaders of most pan-Igbo associations and groups. ”We were sent to pay a visit to Nnamdi Kanu and his associates currently in detention at the Kuje prison as part of a worldwide consultation process on the peace and development of Alaigbo/Nigeria. We visited to hear his own point of view, and we also shared our views with him. Our interactions with Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues were frank and fruitful. Upbraids Army for allegedly killing IPOB protesters “In particular, we condemn the use of disproportionate force and live bullets by law enforcement agencies resulting in the killing and maiming of unarmed protesters generally, especially the killing of IPOB/MASSOB members under whatever guise and call on the law enforcement agencies to take steps to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. We equally call on governors of the states in which these have occurred to exercise their powers under the relevant Commission of Inquiry Laws to investigate these killings through appropriate judicial commissions of inquiry”. The group also urged the judiciary in the affected states to order a coroner’s inquest into the killings. “Additionally, we call on the Chief Judges of the respective states to order Coroners Inquiries into these killings as required by the relevant Coroners Laws. We affirm our belief that it is better for a democracy that people should express their grievances or agitations peacefully and openly than to force them into more dangerous underground operations. Nigeria becoming a failed state According to Soludo; “We believe that Nigeria has all the potential to be great and one of the most prosperous nations on earth. Like most countries of the world, it has its own internal contradictions, challenges of national cohesion and development. Every country that has endured and prospered has devised a dynamic system for dealing with its internal contradictions. No country has prospered by suppressing legitimate agitations or democratic expressions. Nigeria has greatly come short on these counts. Nigeria has never been more divided than now, with the agitations for self-determination becoming more strident and desperate. Most discerning patriots have come to the conclusion that Nigeria as currently structured and governed is unsustainable and drifting to a failed state status. Since 2005, Nigeria has drifted from a rank of 54th position in the global Failed/Fragile State Index to 17th position in 2014 and now to a dangerous 13th position in 2016 (under the ‘Red Alert’ category of countries)”, he stated. APC has abandoned its manifesto They also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of abandoning its social contract with Nigerians, as the former CBN governor said: “In 2015, Nigerians voted for change based on a prospectus contained in the manifesto of the party that won the General Elections. That party is the All Progressives Congress (APC), which now controls the Federal Government and 23 out of 36 states of the Federation. As the ruling party, the APC has a duty to deliver on its most fundamental contract with the Nigerian people namely, to restructure the Nigerian federation.” “So far, APC seems to have abandoned its cardinal contract with Nigeria. It is commendable that it is fighting corruption, fighting Boko Haram, and grappling with a deteriorating economy. However, it is our considered view that without dealing with several of the foundational issues of the Nigerian state in a post-oil economy, much of its efforts will in the end amount to tinkering at the margins. The current Constitution of Nigeria was designed to consume the oil rents and a system designed for consumption cannot become efficient for production in a post-oil world. But the task of rescuing and rebuilding a new Nigeria must be a multi-partisan and all-inclusive effort.” Soludo described the current structure as unworkable, saying all levels of the Nigerian society were in a state of emergency. “There seems to be a national consensus that the current system cannot endure. The APC, PDP, APGA and other political parties, as well as all non-partisan actors and statesmen must come together to save Nigeria. We are in a state of emergency at all levels. The National Council of State needs to be convened urgently, and our legislative houses at the national and state assemblies should wake up to the new realities. If the only thing the current administration succeeds in doing is to re-engineer a new Nigeria, agreed to by its constituent parts and citizens, it would have birthed a new country for the 21st century!” they added. Corroborating, Prof Utomi said as one who was part of writing the APC Manifesto, he knew that much of its promises had been abandoned. He said the group’s agitation would continue until the citizens of Nigeria stand in defence of the rule of law. When you incarcerate Nanmdi Kanu, the truth of the matter is that who is incarcerated are all prisoners of conscience. When you incarcerate him, you incarcerate all people who believe in the rule of law. How can you have a secret trial of a citizen in a democracy it has no basis at all”, he stated.

President Trump’s big speech to Congress: Winners & Looser

President Donald Trump of United State Of America  delivered a strong speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, an address sure to embolden both the chief executive and Congressional Republicans who support him.
The whole world watched  watched, tweeted and took some notes about the best and the worst of the night that was.  The picks are below.

Winners
* Donald Trump: This was the best \”big\” speech he has given as president. It may well have been the best speech Trump has given since he entered politics way back in June 2015. Trump didn\’t walk away from his decidedly dark vision of the current state of the country but his overall tone was more conciliatory and optimistic than I\’ve ever heard him.
Trump hit a few very nice notes: His condemnation of threats against Jewish community centers at the start of the speech was a very nice grace note and his honoring of the widow of the Navy SEAL killed in the recent Yemen raid was remarkably powerful moment.
Critics will rightly point out that several of Trump\’s claims — about the rising violence in America, for example — missed the factual mark by a wide margin. And, at times, Trump seemed to be on the verge of returning to his confrontational self — particularly when discussing immigration and the border wall.
Trump delivered both a forceful defense of his nationalist worldview — \”My job is not to represent the world. My job is to represent the United States of America,\” he said at one point — and a proof point that he can be, dare I say it, presidential when the moment demands it.
* Congressional Republicans: Anyone who tells you Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell weren\’t a little bit worried about how Trump would do on Tuesday night — and what that would mean for his ability to rally Republicans going forward — is lying to you.  Trump\’s speech will go a long way to quieting the nerves of Congressional Republicans and convincing them that Trump might just be capable of being the president they desperately hope he can be. His address will serve as a validation for the likes of Ryan and McConnell, who have steadfastly supported Trump throughout the rough seas of his first month in office.

*Polarization: If you needed to understand just how polarized our politics are, the repeated shots of Republicans rising to cheer Trump while Democrats sat on their hands would do it.  The theater of the State of the Union is always a bit overdone but what was clear from the start on Tuesday night was that Republicans were bound and determined to cheer for virtually everything Trump said and Democrats were bound and determined to do the exact opposite.
Steve Bannon and Ivanka Trump: If you are looking for the two biggest influencers in terms of what Trump said and how he said it, look no further than Bannon, the president\’s chief strategist, and Ivanka, the president\’s eldest daughter.  The unapologetic nationalism and indictment of the political system was pure Bannon. The push for paid family leave and focus on education was all Ivanka.
Losers
* The devilish details of replacing Obamacare: In the runup to the Trump speech, Republican members of Congress voiced hopes that Trump might give them guidance about how he\’d like to replace Obamacare.  What Trump did talk about — lowering the price of prescription drugs, keeping the pre-existing conditions provision — are widely popular idea. The issue, of course, is how to pay for all of this if you strip out the rest of the elements of Obamacare.
* People rooting for Trump\’s imminent demise: He\’s not going anywhere, folks.  And that speech suggests he might have more upside than almost anyone thought.
* \”Aisle hogs\”: I H-A-T-E the annual stories of the people — Eliot Engel of New York and Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas are two of the most prominent — who stake out spots on the aisle to ensure they shake hands with the various luminaries including the president. There was a noticeable lack of crowding along the aisles this time around. Possible we can drop this as a story in the future? Ok, it\’s agreed!

Inflation: Misery, as prices of foodstuffs hit the roof
Inflation hit 18.72% in January
•Kerosene, bread, meat, fish,  others almost unaffordable
LAGOS—Prices of bread, meat, fish, oil, yam and other essential commodities, last month, became increasingly unaffordable for Nigerians, as the inflation rate rose for the 15th consecutive month to 18.72 per cent.
Driven principally by impact of Naira devaluation and increase in prices of petroleum products, prices of goods and services have been rising persistently since 2015, with the inflation rate, which measures rate of increase in prices, rising from 9.3 per cent in October 2015 to 18.55 in December 2016. For example, the price of 50 kilogrammes of Garri, rose by 285 per cent to N15, 000, last month, from N3, 900 in January last year. Similarly, 50 kilogrammes of beans that sold for N13, 500 in January 2016, rose by 33 per cent to N18, 000 last month. Also, price of 25 litres of Palm Oil rose  by 208 per cent to N17,500 , last month, from N6, 500 in January 2016.

Confirming this development in its Consumer Price Indexreport for January, 2017, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said prices of essential commodities rose at a faster pace in January pushing up the inflation rate to 18.72 per cent.
The bureau said: “The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation, increased by 18.72 per cent (year-on-year) in January 2017, 0.17 perc entage points higher from the rate recorded in December 2016 (18.55) per cent. Increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yield the Headline Index.
“Communication, Restaurants and Hotels again recorded the slowest pace of growth in January, growing at 5.1 per cent and 8.4 per cent (year-on-year) respectively.
“However, the faster pace of growth in headline inflation, year on year, were bread and cereals, meat, fish, oil and fats; potatoes, yam and other tubers; wine and spirits, clothing materials and accessories, electricity, cooking gas, liquid and solid fuels, motor cars and maintenance, vehicle spare parts, fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment, passenger transport by road.
“On a month on month basis, headline inflation was driven by passenger transport by air, fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment, liquid fuels, cooking gas, oil and fats, fruits, cheese and eggs, fish, meat, bread and cereals.
“The Food Index increased by 17.82 per cent (year-on-year) in January, up by 0.43 per cent points from rate recorded in December 2016 (17.39) per cent. During the month, all major food sub-indexes increased, with soft drinks recording the slowest pace of increase at 7.8 percent(year on year).
“Price movements recorded by All Items less farm produce or Core sub-index rose by 17.90 per cent (year- on-year) in January, down by 0.20 per cent points from rates recorded in December 2016 (18.10) per cent. During the month, the highest increases were seen in Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other fuels; Education and Transport, growing at 27.2, 21.0 and 17.2 per cent respectively.
“On a month-on-month basis, the Headline index increased albeit, at a slower pace in January 2017. The index increased by 1.01 per cent points in January, 0.05 per cent points from 1.06 per cent rate recorded in December 2016.
“It should be noted that the Headline Index is made up of the Core Index and Farm Produce items. As Processed Foods are included in both the Core and Food sub-indices; this Implies that these sub-indices are not mutually-exclusive.

Analysts predictions
The increase in January inflation rate is consistent with predictions by analysts at Afrinvest Plc, a Lagos-based investment firm. In it’s weekly review of financial markets, last Friday, the company stated: “We forecast year-on-year ( Y-o-Y) headline inflation rate to inch higher to 18.7 per cent from 18.6 per cent in December 2016 due to a relatively lower base despite projected slower month-on-month (M-o-M) change to 1.0 per cent from 1.1 per cent in December 2016 as the impact of yuletide season on prices wears off. Energy prices were also relatively stable in January save for price of diesel and kerosene which inched slightly higher whilst the exchange rate at the interbank remained largely steady in the period. All variables unchanged, we project headline inflation to begin to ease from February 2017 due to high base in the corresponding period. Yet, we think prices may edge higher if the naira further depreciates as the feedback effect on energy (petrol and diesel) prices may fuel further hike in general price level.”
