The Morning Sunset: The Untold Story Of How Travelling To A New World Is Not Always Greener

The Morning Sunset: The Untold Story Of How Travelling To A New World Is Not Always Greener
Majority of people in developing countries especially the youth dream of leaving their
home countries for a greener pasture in the Western world. While staying in the urban or
suburban in the same countries offer prospects, most dreams are to make it to Europe. This
is because of the opinion that Europe/America (abroad as is popularly known) is a land
flowing with milk and honey. Of course, there are a lot more opportunities in abroad including
better life, good health infrastructure, good roads, constant electricity, employment, sound
education.
However, nowadays, many people negate the legal means and engage their journey to Europe
through dangerous means including via desert and the sea. They fall prey of swindlers who
rob them huge amount of money. These innocent people fall victims because the information
they perceive are false. They are not aware of the truth behind the journey. They become
vulnerable and exposed to humiliation, rape, exploitation, abuse and trafficking. In addition,
thousands of them loose their lives while engaging in this perilous journey. The relatives
patiently wait that one day they will call home or even return home for a perfect and joyful
reunion, not knowing that they have long been dead; that they never received proper burial
rights because their bodies have been covered by dessert sand; eaten by fishes in the ocean
and or wild animals. That these loved ones will never return home, not now and not in the
future. It is in fact highly pathetic and terrible hearing, reading and watching this same story
every year.
With a heartfelt thought for the family of those who lose their lives in the desert and ocean;
and a voice pleading to those who are nursing the idea to make that dangerous journey, Joy
brings this awareness of the unnecessary loss of young and promising lives in the name of
search for greener pastures in Europe., Hence the story of her book “The Morning Sunset”.

This story emanated from her desire to demonstrate what she had observed over the years
she lived in Europe over unnecessary immigration of Africans into Europe, coupled with the
level of humiliation Africans are subjected to in foreign land; with a trained engineer plucking

tomatoes and a medical doctor babysitting to earn a living.
Her story is to create awareness and sensitize Africans on the danger behind travelling abroad
through the desert and the sea. In as much as travelling to abroad is good, with savoury
opportunities, engaging in a perilous journey via desert and sea does not worth it.
Her story will not only educate people on the dangers of illegal journeys through the desert
and the sea which; include loss of money and lives of our youngsters but will encourage people
to take the legal route to make that burning dream of their hearts to come true; just as

Professor Oluyinka Olutoye, Dr. Philip Emegwali and the host other celebrated Africans here
did.

Why Cybersecurity Is So Lucrative for Criminals and How We Can Fight Back – Osita Oparaugo, Esq

0

Today, more than 5 billion people, over 63% of the global population, are online. As our reliance on digital infrastructure deepens, cybercrime has exploded into one of the most profitable and low-risk ventures for criminals globally.

If you lead a business, work in IT, or care about the security of your organization, here’s what you need to know and what you can do.

Why Cybercrime Is So Attractive to Criminals

1. Low Entry Barrier

You no longer need elite skills to become a cybercriminal. Basic malware kits and phishing tools can be purchased on the dark web for as little as $10. Even sophisticated ransomware kits often cost only a few hundred dollars. This ease of access has opened the door to a flood of low-level but highly destructive attackers.

2. Low Risk of Prosecution

Cybercriminals operate across borders. Someone in Country A can target victims in Country B while laundering money through Country C. This international complexity makes legal enforcement extremely difficult, often allowing criminals to act with near impunity.

3. High Rewards

Ransomware attacks can yield millions of dollars in cryptocurrency, often in an untraceable form. High-profile incidents, such as WannaCry and NotPetya, paralyzed healthcare systems and major corporations. The public leak of powerful tools like the NSA’s EternalBlue exploit only escalated the threat landscape.

Bottom line? It’s cheap to start, hard to catch, and highly profitable.

How Organizations Can Mitigate Cybersecurity Risks

Cyber threats won’t disappear overnight, but their impact can be reduced with a multi-layered, strategic approach.

1. Prioritize Cybersecurity at the Top

Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT problem; it’s a business issue. Boards and executives must conduct regular security reviews and ensure that adequate resources are allocated. Investors should also consider cybersecurity maturity during due diligence.

2. Build a Dedicated Cybersecurity Team

A strong internal team should focus on the three pillars of cyber-resilience:

Technology: Deploy firewalls, endpoint protection, encryption, and real-time monitoring.

Processes: Enforce access controls, data handling policies, and incident response protocols to ensure security and compliance.

People: Provide frequent, scenario-based training on phishing, social engineering, and other common threats.

According to the GetBundi Education Technology team’s research, 95% of security breaches are attributed to human error. Investing in your people is as essential as investing in your tech.

3. Collaborate and Share Intelligence

Cybercriminals share tools and tactics freely. To stay ahead, companies must collaborate across industries, share threat intelligence, and work closely with law enforcement. Collective defence is often more effective than going it alone.

Final Thought

The digital era has changed everything from how we work to how we’re attacked. Cybercrime is here to stay, but with the right mindset and strategy, we can dramatically reduce its impact.

Cybersecurity is no longer optional. It’s a business imperative.

If you’re working on building a cyber-resilient organization or exploring cybersecurity best practices, let’s connect. I’d love to exchange insights and experiences.

By 2024, the program will have scaled up to train 1,000 women in web development and data analytics. With TechSis 2025, GetBundi aims to deliver high-impact, future-proof training to 1,500 more women, targeting two of the most in-demand digital fields globally.

“Captain Africa” and the Illusion of Liberation

“Captain Africa” and the Illusion of Liberation

By Mike Ikem Umealo

Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, hailed by supporters as “Captain Africa”, has fashioned himself into a fearless crusader against Western imperialism. His rhetoric is thunderous: the West must leave Africa alone and learn to respect the sovereignty of its people and leaders.

Of course, we are all in agreement on that: The West Should respect the sovereignty of African countries.

Yet, behind the strongman image lies a complicated script.

A little observation, if you may, perhaps even an insignificant one. One which many might say, “it doesn’t matter.”
But I find it significant and symbolic, so, I must speak.

When Traoré visits Western capitals, the pistol that adorns his waist during regional summits is nowhere in sight; safely stowed aboard the presidential jet. There, in the courts of global diplomacy, he adopts the protocol and poise of conventional statecraft.

But among his African peers, the gun returns; hoisted visibly as a symbol of authority. In West Africa, where ghaghagha (a forceful show of power) often dictates who commands respect, the image plays well.

Still, a deeper contradiction lies beneath the surface.

Now, the more significant issue.

Despite the anti-West rhetoric, Burkina Faso’s major trade partners under Traoré include Russia, China, Switzerland, France, India, the UAE, and Singapore.

Absent from the list? Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt; the very nations often invoked in his Pan-African rhetoric of unity and self-reliance for the black race.

So the question lingers:
Is “Captain Africa” truly liberating Burkina Faso and Africa from foreign grip, or merely switching costumes on the same stage where foreign powers write the script for him, as they did with his predecessors?

This dilemma reflects a broader tension in Africa’s political imagination. There’s a seductive appeal to the idea of the “benevolent dictator”, of a wise and just leader wielding absolute power for the good of the people. In contrast to messy, inefficient democracies like Nigeria, such a vision can feel refreshing and decisive.

Many Nigerians still consider figures like the dictators General Babangida and General Abacha, who, together, ruled Nigeria for 13 years, in the mid 80s to the late 1990s, as more effective leaders than the politicians we have in office since 1999.

But here’s the truth that history will not let us forget:
The ideal dictator does not exist.

Dictatorships depend entirely on the character of a single individual. And power, as history and psychology both affirm, almost always corrupts. Worse still, authoritarian regimes offer no embedded systems for accountability, no checks for abuse, and no peaceful avenues for transition when things go wrong.

Even flawed democracies offer tools for change: elections, courts, protests, journalism, and civil society. They may be slow and disappointing, but they guarantee something no dictatorship ever does: the people’s right to have a voice.

The proof of failure in Burkina Faso’s current trajectory is not just theoretical, it’s in the numbers.

In 2018, there were an estimated 6,700 Burkinabè nationals living in France and 3,000 in Italy. By 2023, another 3,500 had migrated, legally or otherwis, to Spain, Italy, and Greece. In the first weeks of 2025 alone, 1,700 more used dangerous migration routes to reach Europe.

But they are not migrating to Russia.

Russia does not offer visa-free travel to Burkinabè citizens and will not accept them as even refugees.

Moscow has not opened its borders to African opportunity seekers. What Russia has sent instead is more telling: in mid-2024, its Ministry of Defense deployed the Bear Brigade to Ouagadougou to augment the 300 Russian military personnel, including mercenaries, already stationed there since 2022.

Their task?
To protect the military junta and train Burkina Faso’s Special Forces.

Russia did not send their engineers, doctors, scientists, or investors.
It sent trained killers (some of them convicted criminals) whose “redemption” lies in serving as guns-for-hire in Africa.

So we must ask: what kind of independence is “Captain Africa” talking about?

He seeks to break ties with France, but not to align with the rest of Africa, but instead , he also removed Form ECOWAS membership and formed alliance with the Russian Federation. This is the junta’s idea of freeing Burkina Faso from imperialists.

A new colonialism dressed in camouflage?
A new dependency cloaked in nationalist slogans?

There is a proverb from my Homeland, Nigeria: “May monkey never dash you banana.”

In Igbo it says, “Ebe e si e nyere nwata nri n’aka ekpe, e jiri aka nri gbaa ya ọsọ.” (Where a servant is offered food with the left hand, the right hand of the master may be ready to strike.)

It’s a reminder for us to beware of what looks like a gift, when it may be the start of a trap.

God Bless
Mike Ikem Umealo.

IMO ASSEMBLY SEEKS TO IMMORTALIZE FORMER IMO GOVERNOR, DEE SAM ONUNAKA MBAKWE, IN HIS LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OBOWO

Considering the many meritorious leadership initiatives, worthy of emulation, of the first civilian Governor of the old Imo State, with projects dotting every nooks and crannies of the State, but never sited any in his home soil, except for the Avutu Poultry that has become moribond, the Imo State House Of Assembly has called for the immortalization of His Excellency Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, with the establishment of a Tertiary Institution in Obowo, named after him.

This was the outcome of the House Plenary activity on Tuesday 29/04/2025.

Presenting the Motion, the Chief Sponsor and Member Representing Obowo State Constituency, Rt Honourable Kennedy Chidozie Ibeh, explained that the history of Imo State would not be told without the name Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, as his record of service has become the yardstick to measure purposeful development and leadership.

According to Rt Honourable Kennedy Ibeh, *”Despite the many durable legacy projects of Dee Sam Mbakwe, no State Institution that could ensure the Socio-Economic development of Obowo LGA was established, except for Avutu Poultry, which paralyzed immediately after Dee Sam Mbakwe’s tenure. Obowo appears to have been abandoned, remained underdeveloped and marginalized by successive Administrations, despite donating the vast parcel of land for the establishment of that Avutu Poultry (Imo Modern Poultry), which in itself was abandoned”.*

Sounding very optimistic and confident that the iconic former Governor would be immortalized in his local government, Obowo, the Prolific lawmaker noted that the administration of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma is sensitive to the development of local governments in the State. He also commended Governor Uzodimma for appreciating the contributions of Dee Sam Mbakwe to the development of old Imo State, comprising of Abia State, Ebonyi State and the present Imo State. He further appreciated the Infrastructure Governor for taking it upon himself to reconstruct and renovate the Country Home of the Iconic former Governor, Dee Sam Onunaka Mbakwe.

Calling on his Honourable Colleagues to lend their voices to the Motion which received popular support, the Vibrant Ranking Lawmaker said that the Establishment of a Tertiary Institution in Obowo in Dee Sam Mbakwe’s name will reignite the Socio-Economic development of the local government. Rt Honourable Kennedy Ibeh also called for the reconstruction of the only tarred road in Obowo which transversed six communities built by Dee Sam Mbakwe and which also passed through his country home.

The Motion which was seconded by Hon Engr Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemelam, Member Representing Ehime Mbano State Constituency, was co-sponsored by the following lawmakers :

Further describing the former Governor as a hero who was selfless, they stated that he distributed social and economic amenities across the old Imo State without discrimination, and therefore deserves to be immortalized in his local government area, Obowo.

Satisfied with the superlative submissions of his Honourable Colleagues, the Speaker, Rt Honourable Chike Olemgbe, who presided, put it to vote and it was unanimously adopted. Thereafter, he Ruled as follows :

* Be It Resolved By This Honourable House To Urge His Excellency Governor Hope Uzodimma To Recover Obowo LGA from Socio-Economic Atrophy By The Establishment Of A Tertiary Institution In Obowo And Name Same After Sam Onunaka Mbakwe.

IMO ASSEMBLY INVITES CONTRACTOR FOR ABANDONING EZINNIHITTE MBAISE ROAD PROJECT

Considering the plight the people and residents of Ezinnihitte Mbaise local government area of Imo State are going through on the major road leading to Ezinnihitte Mbaise Local Government Area Headquarters, which cut across five INEC Wards, the Imo State House Of Assembly has summoned the contractor for abandoning the road project.

This was the outcome of the complaint, through a Motion, brought before the House by the Member Representing Ezinnihitte Mbaise State Constituency, Hon Dr Henry Agbasonu, on Thursday, 17/04/2025, with a continued debate on Tuesday, 29/04/2025.

Speaking on the matter, Hon Dr Henry Agbasonu, explained that the road is the major link to Ezinnihitte Mbaise and Ezinnihitte Mbaise Local Government Area Headquarters, which cut across five INEC Wards, namely ; Itu, Okpofe/Ezeagbogu, Eziudo, Ihitte and Obama/Umunama.

According to Dr Agbasonu, the road has been in a deplorable condition since the time of the Administration of His Excellency Dr Ikedi Godson Ohakim (2007-2011), and that since then, whenever it rained his people finds it difficult to use the road, as it has become a nightmare.

In his words, Hon Dr Agbasonu, who was close to tears stated, *”Anytime it rains, the road becomes impassable due to heavy flood at different spots, and the deplorable condition of the road has caused lots of hardship to my people”.*

Still lamenting on the worsening condition of the road, Dr Henry Agbasonu said, *”Farmers, school children, the elderly people and other strategic road users, including motorists find it difficult to ply the road, mostly, during the rainy season, as vehicles get stuck and most people are forced to take alternative routes, which are usually longer, in this day of high cost of fuel”.*

However, with the assurance of the quality road infrastructure of Governor Hope Uzodimma constructed across the state, the only voice from Ezinnihitte Mbaise State Constituency in the Imo State House Of Assembly, comforted himself as he beckoned on his Honourable Colleagues to lend their voices to the Motion on the abandoned road project, which he said covers about 7.2 km.

The Motion which was seconded by the Minority Leader And Member Representing Aboh-Mbaise State Constituency, Hon Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie, was co-sponsored by the following 17 lawmakers :

1. Hon Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie.

2. Hon Samuel Nkem Otuibe.

3. Rt Hon Kennedy Chidozie Ibeh.

4. Hon Okey Ernest Udeze.

5. Rt Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.

6. Hon Kanayo Onyemaechi.

8. Hon Innocent Ikechukwu Ikpamezie.

9. Hon Kelechi Onumajuru Ofurum.

10. Hon Ikenna Martins Ihezuo.

11. Hon Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemelam.

12. Hon James Uba Esile.

13. Ozioma Worship Benneth Ebonine.

14. Hon Sam Ikechukwu Osuji.

15. Hon Gilbert Chiedozie Nwosu.

16. Hon Chisom Ojukwu.

17. Hon Uzoma Francis Osuoha.

The Motion was supported by the following lawmakers who asserted that the contractor be invited to explain why he abandoned the all important and sensitive road :

1. Hon Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie (Aboh-Mbaise).

2. Hon Hon Kelechi Onumajuru Ofurum (Owerri-North).

3. Hon Sam Ikechukwu Osuji (Isiala Mbano).

4. Hon Engr Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemelam (Ehime Mbano).

5. Hon Chisom Ojukwu (Nkwerre).

Satisfied with contributions from Honourable Members, the Speaker, Rt Honourable Chike Olemgbe, who presided, put it to vote and it was adopted. Thereafter, he Ruled as follows :

* Be It Resolved By This Honourable House To Invite The Country Who Was Awarded The Contract For This Road But Has Since Absconded To Explain Why He Abandoned The Contract.

The Clerk was directed to communicate the Resolution of the House to the appropriate quarters.

The Impact of the Digital Skills Gap on the Growth of Tech Startups in Africa by Osita Oparaugo, Esq.

Africa’s tech ecosystem is growing remarkably, fuelled by increasing internet penetration, mobile adoption, and a young, dynamic population. Startups across fintech, agritech, edtech, and other sectors offer innovative solutions to longstanding challenges.

However, a significant hurdle threatens the sustainability and scalability of this progress: the digital skills gap. The shortage of adequately skilled professionals in the digital economy poses significant barriers to advancement.

Understanding the Digital Skills Gap in Africa

The digital skills gap in Africa is striking. Countries across the continent score between 1.8 and 5 on the Digital Skills Gap Index, compared to a global average of 6. Alarmingly, 12 20 countries with the weakest digital skills are in Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa also records the world’s lowest literacy rates, further compounding the issue. Statistics show that 90% of African children leave school without acquiring basic digital skills, severely limiting their opportunities in today’s digital world.

According to a report by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Sub-Saharan Africa will require 230 million digital jobs by 2030 — yet the continent faces a significant shortage of skilled workers. Limited technology adoption among firms hinders productivity, job creation, and economic growth.

Challenges Posed by the Digital Skills Gap

Stifled Innovation and Scalability

The lack of skilled talent restricts innovation. Many African startups struggle to scale due to inadequate technical expertise. Without a strong pool of software developers, data scientists, web designers, and engineers, startups find it difficult to iterate, improve efficiency, and stay competitive globally.

Increased Operational Costs

When local talent is unavailable, startups often turn to expensive outsourcing options. Importing technical expertise drives operational costs and limits opportunities to build local capacity.

Limited Access to Talent

Startups depend heavily on skilled workers to develop products, manage cloud infrastructures, and maintain security. A shortage of qualified professionals intensifies talent competition, inflating salaries and making it difficult for young companies to compete with larger firms.

Slowed Economic Growth

A thriving tech ecosystem can significantly contribute to national economies. However, the digital skills gap prevents Africa from fully realizing this potential, hampering job creation and digital transformation across the continent.

The GetBundi Approach

Despite these challenges, organizations like GetBundi are working to close the gap and empower African tech startups with a qualified, skilled workforce.

1. Online and Accessible Digital Skills Training

GetBundi offers online courses in software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. Leveraging digital platforms ensures accessible, affordable, and flexible learning for individuals across Africa, including remote areas.

2. Industry-Aligned Curriculum

Recognizing the disconnect between academia and industry needs, GetBundi delivers training aligned with market demands. Collaborating with tech companies and startups, they equip learners with practical, job-ready skills that enhance employability.

3. Encouraging STEM Education from Early Stages

GetBundi emphasizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education from primary and secondary school levels, fostering early interest in tech careers and ensuring a steady pipeline of future digital professionals.

4. Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide

To ensure inclusive access, GetBundi partners with local organizations to establish digital learning hubs, offers offline learning solutions for low-connectivity areas, and collaborates with governments and NGOs to support nationwide digital literacy initiatives.

The Future of Africa’s Tech Ecosystem

Addressing the digital skills gap is crucial to unlocking Africa’s full tech potential. With targeted interventions, the continent can cultivate a vibrant startup ecosystem, drive innovation, and create millions of digital jobs.

Organizations like GetBundi are pivotal in equipping young Africans with critical skills. However, lasting change requires collaboration among governments, the private sector, and educational institutions. Policies promoting digital education, funding training initiatives, and incentivizing workforce development will enable sustainable growth.

Africa’s youthful population is a tremendous asset. By investing in digital education today, Africa can transform its economy and position itself as a global leader in technology and innovation.

Conclusion

The digital skills gap remains a significant obstacle to the growth of tech startups in Africa, stifling innovation, talent availability, and economic development. However, Africa can bridge this divide with strategic efforts by organizations like GetBundi and broader collaborative initiatives.

Accessible education, industry collaboration, and targeted digital skills programs will pave the way for a thriving, globally competitive tech ecosystem, securing Africa’s technological and financial future for future generations.
