WELLNESS CORNER: HEALTH TALK

Health
What’s irritating your skin?
Is your skin itchy, breaking out or covered in a strange spot or rash?  It may be one of 17 common problems.  Skin inflammation, changes in texture or colour, and spots may result from infection a chronic skin condition, or contact with an allergen or irritant.  if  you think you  have one  of these  common  adult  skin problems , have  your doctor  check it out .    Most are minor, but others can signal something more serious.
MELASMA (PREGNANCY MASK):Melasma (chloasma) is brown patches on your cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. It is often called the “pregnancy mask” because it happens to half of all pregnant women. Men can get it too. If it doesn’t go away on its own after the baby comes, you can treat it with prescription creams and over the counter products. Sunlight makes it worse, so always use a broad –spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen.
WARTS: in most cases common warts appear on the finger or hands. They are caused by the human papillomavirus.   Warts spread when you touch something used by a person with the virus.  To prevent more warts cover them with bandages, keep them dry and don’t pick them. They are usually harmless and painless. You can treat them with tropical medications or a doctor can freeze and burn them off. More advanced removal techniques include surgery, laser s and chemical.

SEBORRHEIC  KERSTOSES : Seborrheickeratoses are noncancerous  growths that often  show up as one ages .they can appear on many areas  of the skin either  alone  or in groups . They may be dark or multicolored, and they usually have a grainy surface although they can be smooth and waxy. You don’t need to treat them unless they get irritated or you don’t like the way they look.  They are easy to mistake for moles or skin cancer, but a dermatologist can tell the difference.

SHINGLES (HERPES ZOSTER): A rash of raised dots that turns into painful blisters, shingles causes your skin to burn, itch, tingle, or become very sensitive. Shingles often show up on your trunk and buttocks, but can appear anywhere. An outbreak    lasts about two weeks. You will recover but pain, numbness and itching could linger for months, years or even the rest of your life. Treatment includes creams for your skin, antiviral drugs steroids and even antidepressants.

WELLNESS CORNER: Healthy Eating and Physical Activity

WELLNESS CORNER:  Healthy Eating and Physical Activity by Ikechukwu Anyanwu

This is a hectic period for many families across the country. With so many things going on, it’s easy to let healthy eating and physical activity fall down the priority list.

Promoting physical activity and healthy eating has always been an interest of mine. This led me to start working with children, working with them on Family Fun time project and also working in a Culinary industry for a decade now and I have discovered that a child’s health and wellbeing starts at the family level. When we see children who don’t take healthy eating and physical activity seriously, it’s the first place we turn for fostering a behavior change.
Today it’s more important than ever for children to receive the same messages at school as they do at home. Teachers want to keep order—and a room full of young children jumping and playing is often quite the opposite. This lack of parallel between teachers and parents has been the focus of my most recent research, which we are collecting data for and preparing to analyze the results. There is no one-size-fits-all intervention, but below are four things that can help.

  1. Social support: Having someone to lean on within the family structure is crucial, whether it’s providing transportation to practice or simply sharing the activity. Kids who know physical activity is meaningful and that they can rely on someone for encouragement are always more motivated to stay active. This also reaches beyond the family structure. Some parents use social media for support with behavioral change. They need that daily interaction and can find it with people online. It’s all about finding the right support system.
  2. Role models: It’s amazing how kids are so easily influenced, even when parents and family members don’t realize it. For example, children should not only share in physical activity with their parents, but they should observe them participating in their own exercise routine like running or yoga. This helps the importance of physical activity sink in. It’s also great when parents practice what they preach by eating healthy foods and providing opportunities for their children to get involved like shopping  or trying new activities together.
  3. Holistic wellness: My research has always focused on physical wellness. But as I think more about overall health, and as I work with disadvantaged populations, I’m moving more toward a holistic approach to well being. How can someone be physically well if they are not well emotionally or financially? All of these areas work together, so when people are faced with more pressing issues, physical activity and healthy eating often fall to the back burner. Setting and achieving goals in other areas of health and wellness can help families get to a place where healthy eating and physical activity become higher priorities.
  4. Accessibility: If people don’t have access to parks and trails or grocery stores with good fruits and vegetables at a fair price, it is much more difficult to stay active and eat right. Of course, just because people have access to these resources doesn’t mean they will use them, but it becomes impossible without access.

Tips for Staying Active and Eating Right

Whether you’re working toward a positive change with your child or just looking for helpful ways to stay active and promote healthy eating, consider these four tips.

  1. Plan outdoor/physical activities as a family. While the weather can sometimes be challenging in places there are a variety of parks and lakes available to the public. It’s important to make physical activity a normal part of family time. Head out for a walk or find a playground nearby.
  2. Get kids involved. While kids need parents or guardians who are active role models in their health and wellness, they also need to feel supported in their own There are a number of affordable options like soccer offered at local parks, dance classes or even play groups that kids can enjoy with support from their parents or guardians.
  3. Make time for family meals. It’s important to allow 20-30 minutes for slowing down and sitting at the table together. Research  shows students who engage in regular family meals are less depressed, have better grades and eat more fruits and vegetables and less fast food.
  4. Let your children help with food preparation at an early age. This can be as simple as letting your children help with washing fruits and vegetables. Not only will they see the importance of healthy food by working to prepare it, parents and guardians are more likely to prepare meals at home if it means quality time with their children. If they are too young for washing or cutting food, try kid-friendly meals such as personal pizzas—great for assembling a masterpiece by spreading the marinara and choosing toppings.

In an effort to promote overall family health, including involvement in physical activity,  Arise Afrika  is partnering with GCFN CONSULT, All Africa Media Network, Churches, hospitals, health clubs, schools and more for its 7th annual Family Fun time – Featuring  Health and Fitness Day Tips .

RIVERS: REVIVE PSD FORUM, TROMPCON URGES NDDC

RIVERS: Revive PSD Forum, TROMPCON urges NDDC
The Association of Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON) has called for the reactivation of the Partners for Sustainable Development (PSD) Forum, which serves as the clearing house of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. The royal fathers made the call on Tuesday when they paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Office of the Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC), at its headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Eze Akuwueze Ikegwuruka, the paramount ruler of Ngbirichi in Imo State and the national chairman of TROMPCON, said that the PSD Forum was an important organ for bringing all the stakeholders under one umbrella to aid the process of harmonizing development projects as enunciated in the Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan (NDRDMP).
Eze Ikegwuruka said that TROMPCON was concerned about the increasing incidence of oil theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta. To put a stop to this development, he said that the group was planning to host an international conference to address the issue. He assured the Federal Government and the NDDC of their “commitment to creating the enabling environment for the execution of various development projects in the Niger Delta Region.”
Addressing the Royal Fathers, the NDDC Managing Director, Sir (Barr.) Bassey Dan-Abia, said that the new governing board of the commission had in its meeting and approved the re-activation of the PSD Forum. He said that the NDDC management realized the importance of the forum which brings together representatives of federal and state governments of oil-bearing states, youth and women leaders, traditional rulers as well as the organized private sector, civil society, the mass media and international development agencies such as the UNDP and the World Bank

POLITICS TODAY: NIGERIANS TO STOP SUPPORTING NON-PERFOMING OFFICE HOLDERS DURING ELECTIONS

NIGERIANS TO STOP SUPPORTING NON-PERFORMING
OFFICE HOLDERS DURING ELECTIONS  IDA

All over the world, performance has remained the brain and desire of all mankind. In search of true leadership and service, this means that everybody will not win at the same time to serve the people. The mandate is expected to hinge on a particular person or group of individuals admistering the affairs of the people in a particular time. Lets us say in a political tenure of 4years, rendering service to his or her people.

Devoid of party leanings and sentiments, the time is now. It is time for all Nigerians to come back to their senses to trace their root and origin to realize that Nigerians are special people created by God. This Article is made real by calling Nigerians to look well to be fair in analysis to access the performances of our past leaders who has held political positions and their various individual and collective service delivery. During elections into contestable seats from Councillorship, Local Government Chairmanship, House of Assembly seat, House of Representatives, Senate, Governor and Presidency. All these are viable political positions that are contestable and has a maximum duration of 4years which is quite sufficient for any person who is a true Nigerian to put in his best to serve his people. Single tenure of 4years is sufficient for persons that want to serve their people, therefore, multiple tenures without performance should be seen as a thing of the past and should be highly discouraged. Let aspirants for various positions see that their past records and assessment will go a long way to determine their re-election chances more specially for elevation to higher positions.
All elective positions should be seen as the vehicle through which our destinies are carried either to a pleasurable destination or we will continue to languish in poor performance of elective officers. Actually, when somebody is elected, he makes his best available and should realize the magic of get it first right approach without looking for second term opportunity to deliver the democratic dividends to his people.
Let people be voted and after one term, if after evaluation, it is not convincing by his performance, achievements and popularity, he is to be voted out. This will go a long way to determine and prepare the minds of those who are intending to contest for positions, to really be sure of themselves before vying for any position knowing fully well that they will not get the second chance if they misuse the first mandate given to them by their people.  If  this measure is well applied and instituted in the mind of the people, as a yardstick to measure political office holders so that bad leadership and corruption in Nigerian will loose its strangulating grip in Nigeria and our politics.

GHANA: HOT MATTERS WITH COOKIE IWUOHA

POVERTY : A CURSE, DISEASE OR A SPONSORED PREDICAMENT?

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” – Albert Camus.

What made poverty a permanent state in Humanity, is poverty sponsored? will all mankind on earth ever be united in wealth. Why are few so rich that they acquire things they don’t need, most of it even serves no purpose than just for mere entertainment ,and the others are so poor they can’t afford food to eat talk more of shelter or medication for their health.

Is poverty a choice of the many, out of their laziness or inability of exploiting opportunities that are present, or are many so poor hustling every day because there are no options left, I have heard so much about nations that support their unemployed citizens with enough stipends to afford a shelter, and have met people that  have worked their way from nothing to affluence with sheer hard work and frugality, are all the able bodied poor people to be blamed for being poor? Or is there a system in place that prevents them from climbing the success ladder, my private investigation on this subject has led me to the belief  that capitalism is playing a part in advancing poverty, many  Non Governmental Organization who are putting up a fight against poverty blames capitalism partially for playing a part in impoverishing many and enriching a few, exploitative government policies that milk the masses for the benefit of a few corrupt leaders  who are at the helms of affairs are also another challenge, lack of good innovative ideas or policies to promote the lot of the poor in many nations governance system is also key, so actually for those who love to play the blame game their  seems to be people ,societies or institutions to blame for the poverty that we see around us.
Are we imprisoned economically by the selfish decisions our governments and political leaders make? The idea that a few should manage the resources of a nation is it truly the best? Is our vote truly our power? Or a ploy to make us feel counted or important in a system of governance that  our voice is hardly heard unless we tow the path of violence or civil demonstrations like strike?  Poverty is not just a physical state of lack but also an emotional, psychological and spiritual condition of  emptiness.
The factors promoting poverty in the current age or civilization to name a few is
1.       Ignorance
2.       The existence of Money ( money as a constant means of extraction.)
3.       3. The concept of total ownership
4.       4. Power (centralized  system of power and its twin brother called Corruption)
5.       5.unconscious imprisonment of lofty ideas via promotion of materialism
6.       6. Multi-National Corporations un-repaid debts to Nature and their rampant damage of natural sources of livelihood for communities.
7.       Exploitation of masses for profit via unfair exchange
8.       Greed of neo-colonialism
Like Guarab Chiber asked in his article “Germany ,Spain and Greece are neighbours. do they share their prosperity?
The US and Mexico are neighbours, would they ever share their prosperity ?
The idea of inclusive growth as a society. The idea of giving back to society as duty and not charity. The idea of more you give the more you earn. The idea of respecting humans for what they are and not how rich they are.”
Many in the world are not just poor because its God’s will, we will expose each of the above mentioned subjects contribution in trapping many from defeating the challenges in their society. stay hooked to ARISE AFRIKA and Hot matters column more on this issue next edition.

WAY FORWARD – Local Government

AN X-RAY OF OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT -A catena of failed expectations-
The root in the Local Government has necessitated and legitimized any genuine effort by any state government to redress the shame in the existence of the councils in the states.
These local government councils have constantly failed to live up to the expectation of their mandate in making sure that people at the grassroots feel the impact of the government in measurable terms.
Local governments have been hijacked by so called powerful individuals who claim to be leaders and spokesmen who have invariably become De facto owners to whom these local governments have been ceded. They are known to be doubtful philanthropist who claims to have the masses at their beck and call.
This is their greatest trump card for deceit.
Governments without the right discernment have trusted the chameleonic utterances of such leaders  by allowing them manipulate the party machinery in such a way that Local government chairmen and councilors must be produced through their endorsement if they are to win section election called elections where the electoral process denies the electorate their legitimate mandate.
The so called executive chairmen are therefore reduced to mere robots and stooges  that must take instruction from such leaders.
These leaders have place the Local government under siege, the traditional rulers who are supposed to fight and ensure the wellbeing of their subject once they collect their allowances, they retire to their urban and rural places unaware of the insecurity, tax evasion and mismanagement in their local governments areas because they are cajoled into believing that they will live forever.
In situations where their utterances and resolutions can bring about positive changes, their votes are eclipsed in a conspiracy of silence typical of no mans land.
Party leaders of all descriptions and stake holders in a desperate swinish scramble to reap where they did not sow: gather in the councils at the arrival of local government federal allocations to have their share of the national cake.  Council officials are not left out f the game as they are known to award contracts to themselves and sublet same to close friends whose sharp practices lead to abandonment of contracts, revalidation and profit sharing to that at the end of the day, huge funds have been salted away without any tangible evidence of work one after making council workers millionaires. No wonder why council workers resist deployment under the guise of autonomy of the establishment. This is the local government for you across the country.
It is unfortunate that the masses have continued in vain to hope against hope as promises by local government bosses, whether elected or appointed have become the Sunday – Sunday medicine” In episodic, repetitive and puerile tough pronouncements ranging from carrying everybody along; warning against gossip; absenteeism; open administration; teamwork and payment of outstanding allowances; to dealing firmly with nonconformists.
This has been the order of the day at the inception of any administration while the workers applaud as the “soldier comes and goes”
Professional praise singers will then take over and consummate the orgy of unrealizable manifesto and verbal dividends of democracy.
Invariably there is a rapid return to status quo to organize useless seminars  and workshops on nothing to give the despondent apathetic workforce a sense of belonging. How can the masses anticipate any good from their local governments where chairmen share the allocations from their hotel rooms after which they disappear and make occasional pilgrimages to their council offices only to explain their absence with doubtful meeting at the government house.
Some dry season, strategic roads are graded to rake up dust to justify sacrilegious expenditure instead of making them motor able.
Cottage industries to create employment are often promised to the rural dwellers but these are not in the agenda of local government councils as funds have been spent upfront on frivolities.
Any community that wants portable drinking ware will buy or sink her own boreholes. Mediocre supervisory councilors clad in administrative ineptitude end up serving visitors all in the offices instead of initiating positive proposals to generate revenuer to make the councils visible.
Take a trip to any local government headquarters and weep over grave yard silence, dilapidated infrastructures, unkempt weedy environment that reminds you of war torn establishments. The publicity hungry honorable chairman mortgagees the meager remnants of council funds to the electronic and print media to enhance his noisy vulgarity. Inundate him with chieftaincy titles and see how vain he is.
Go to the local government council to pay any fee and discover that government receipts are not available. Revenue generation is utterly neglected unless it is geared towards enriching the collector.
The concept of local governed have become a misnomer, phantons and painted sepulchers where state legislators are known to collect their own share of the funds from the Local Government they represent in addition to their entitlements. Local government  councils have symbolized a catena of failed expectations as ghost civil servants in some local government from where they collect monthly allowances. Every incoming administration makes frantic efforts to engage revolving ghost workers to give sense of belonging to relations irrespective of establishment procedures not adhered to. This shame goes on ad-infinitum.
Environmental sanitation and disposal of refuse have defied solution and beyond the competence of chairman in urban areas because the fat allocations have made them so intellectually morbid that they chose to hide under the cover of state governments.
People’s money are store away by political office holders for more political exploit in futures. The local government are nor left out in such guests instead of serving the masses. There is therefore need for a new paradym shift. Mature and seasoned individuals with clean public service records should serve as chairmen and councilors of local government to render selfless service to the people, instead of traders and baby aspirants fresh from school.
These should not be imposed on the people under any guise as they easily fail prey to praise singers, deceptive bill boards and assaults. We need chairmen and councilors who know their bearing and commitment t to the people not protégés of God fathers and glorified chief clerks put up for window dressing as executive chairmen. The sole administrator or whatever name they may be called as occasion and circumstance demand should settle down to work according to the dictates of law. They should not be cajoled into feeling that they are better as round pegs in round holes or more qualified than those not appointment. They should realize that their appointment is an opportunity to render selfless service, to the people instead of those responsible for their appointment under the guise of Nigerian factor.
On a more serious note, the Community Development Initiative should be seen as s revolutionary departure from the statuesque. It is aimed correcting the debilitating endemic wrongs of the past, provided the operators will not betray the trust like lions in sheep clothing. It should be endorsed and supported by all for introducing grassroot participatory democracy in practical terms. If the local government system is to serve its purpose in this country instead of being waste pipes
