CBN Plans To Curb Inflation, Stabilise Economy – Cardoso

0

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, says the apex bank is determined to curb inflation and stabilise the nation’s economy.

He stated this in Abuja during the Monetary Policy Forum 2025, featuring fiscal authorities, legislative, private sector, development partners, subject-matter experts, and scholars.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Managing the Disinflation Process,’ the apex bank boss reiterated that the goal of the CBN is to ensure that monetary policy remains forward-looking, adaptive, and resilient.

“Managing disinflation amidst persistent shocks requires not only robust policies but also coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities to anchor expectations and maintain investor confidence.

“Our focus must remain on price stability, the planned transition to an inflation-targeting framework, and strategies to restore purchasing power and ease economic hardship,” Cardoso said.

He stated that actions taken by the CBN have yielded measurable progress – relative stability in the FX market, narrowing exchange rate disparities, and a rise in external reserves to over $40 billion as of December 2024.

According to him, the apex bank is focused on strengthening the banking sector, introducing new minimum capital requirements for banks (effective March 2026) to ensure resilience and position Nigeria’s banking industry for a $1T economy.

“As we shift from unorthodox to orthodox monetary policy, the CBN remains committed to restoring confidence, strengthening policy credibility, and staying focused on its core mandate of price stability,” he stated.

He noted that the CBN launched the Nigeria Foreign Exchange Code, marking a decisive step forward for integrity, fairness, transparency and efficiency in our FX market.

Rwandan, Congolese Leaders Meet Over Eastern DRC Conflict

0

The Rwanda-backed M23 armed group has rapidly seized swathes of territory in the mineral-rich eastern DRC in an offensive that has left thousands dead and displaced vast numbers.

The group took the strategic city of Goma, capital of North Kivu province, last week and is pushing into neighbouring South Kivu in the latest episode of decades-long turmoil in the region.

Kagame took part in person at the summit in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam that brought together the eight countries of the East African Community (EAC)and 16-member South African Development Community.

Tshisekedi appeared via video call.

“We call on all parties to actualise the ceasefire, and specifically on the M23 to halt further advancement and the armed forces of DRC to cease all retaliatory measures,” said Kenyan President William Ruto, current chair of the EAC.

The presidents of Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe were among those present when the summit began.

Local fears
Since the M23 re-emerged in 2021, peace talks hosted by either Angola or Kenya have failed and multiple ceasefires have collapsed.

Rwanda denies military support for the M23.

But a United Nations report said last year Rwanda had around 4,000 troops in the DRC and profited from smuggling out of the country vast amounts of gold and coltan — a mineral vital for phones and laptops.

Rwanda accuses the DRC of sheltering the FDLR, an armed group created by ethnic Hutus who massacred Tutsis during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

The summit comes as the M23 advances on the town of Kavumu, which hosts an airport critical to supplying Congolese troops.

Kavumu is the last barrier before the South Kivu provincial capital Bukavu on the Rwandan border, where panic has set in.

A Bukavu resident said shops were barricading their fronts and emptying storerooms for fear of looting, while schools and universities suspended classes on Friday.

“The border with Rwanda is open but almost impassable because of the number of people trying to cross. It’s total chaos,” they said.

‘Gang rape, slavery’
UN rights chief Volker Turk warned: “If nothing is done, the worst may be yet to come for the people of the eastern DRC but also beyond the country’s borders.”

Turk said nearly 3,000 people had been confirmed killed and 2,880 wounded since M23 entered Goma on January 26, and that final tolls were likely to be much higher.

He also said his team was “currently verifying multiple allegations of rape, gang rape and sexual slavery”.

M23 has already installed its own mayor and local authorities in Goma.

It has vowed to go all the way to the national capital Kinshasa, even though the city lies about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) away across the vast country, which is roughly the size of Western Europe.

The DRC army, which has a reputation for poor training and corruption, has been forced into multiple retreats.

The M23 offensive has raised fears of regional war, given that several countries are engaged in supporting DRC militarily, including South Africa, Burundi and Malawi.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jhon Duran were on target to help Al-Nassr beat Al-Feiha 3-0 in the Saudi Pro League.

The legendary striker recently turned 40 and hit another milestone with his goal.

Ronaldo hits another milestone
Duran, who recently joined Al-Nassr in a blockbuster deal from Aston Villa, opened the scoring after 22 minutes.

The Saudi giants had to wait until the 72nd minute to get their second goal through the Colombian striker thanks to an assist by Sadio Mane.

Ronaldo got his goal in the 74th minute to secure the three points for Al-Nassr. They are third of the SPL with 41 points, eight behind leaders Al-Ittihad.

The goal against Ronaldo’s first after turning 40 years old on Wednesday. It was also his 924th goal.

Ronaldo is looking to win his first league title with Al-Nassr and will have to work harder to achieve that this season. In their next match, they face giants Al-Ahli.

“A win and first goal after 40!,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

POLICE REFUTE SOWORE’S MISLEADING CLAIMS ON IGP EGBETOKUN’S TENURE

0

Clarification: Appointment is Legal, Duly Confirmed by Police Council.

The Nigeria Police Force hereby refutes, in clear and unequivocal terms, the baseless and misleading claims recently attributed to Mr. Omoyele Sowore alleging that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, is illegal. Such claims are entirely unfounded and seek to undermine the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment as well as public confidence in the Nigeria Police.

IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is firmly grounded in law, specifically PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended). This provision explicitly states that “The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.” Moreover, his appointment was duly ratified by the Police Council, and he has received the requisite confirmation letter from the Presidency, validating his tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027, in line with the provisions of Section 8A of the executive bill passed which amended the Police Act, clearly stating that “Any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of section 7(6) of this Act. The amendment aims to provide stability and continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, enabling the IGP to implement long-term plans and policies without fear of abrupt termination. This change is expected to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the police force in maintaining law and order in the country.

It is crucial for members of the public to be aware that IGP Egbetokun’s status as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police is both legally and procedurally sound. The Nigeria Police Force views Mr. Sowore’s unfounded assertions as an attempt to erode public trust and foster confusion regarding the force’s leadership. Dissemination of inaccurate information, particularly about the IGP’s standing, has the potential to compromise the security framework of our nation and impede our collective efforts to ensure peace and order.

The Nigeria Police hereby cautions individuals and groups against perpetuating such unfounded narratives that can mislead the public and jeopardize national security. We urge all citizens to focus on objective discussions that advance our shared mission of safeguarding lives and property, rather than indulging in disinformation that may undermine the significant strides we continue to make in maintaining public safety.

Police Arraign Sowore For Calling Egbetokun ‘Illegal IG’

0

Convener of the #RevolutionNow protest Omoyele Sowore has been arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on charges of cybercrime before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court Abuja

Sowore had honoured the invitation of the police on Monday, January 27, 2025, when he was questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.

He was subsequently granted administrative bail but rejected the conditions of bail and remained in custody.

The police later filed a 16-count charge of cybercrime against him.

In count three, the police said Sowore on December 20, 2024, through his X handle, called the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, “the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force”.

Sowore is being accused by the police of posting the picture Egbetokun on his X handle with the caption: “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption, a country run by characterless people can not make progress”.

The police also alleged that Sowore, through his X handle, said, “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now”.

He pleaded not guilty to 16 count charge of alleged cybercrime.

Plane carrying 64 collides with helicopter, crashes in Washington

0

A US passenger jet carrying 64 people crashed into Washington’s Potomac River Wednesday after colliding midair with a military helicopter on a night training exercise, prompting a desperate search for survivors in the dark, near-freezing water.

The plane was approaching Reagan National Airport at around 9:00 pm (0200 GMT) after flying from Wichita, Kansas, when the collision happened.

American Airlines, whose subsidiary PSA Airlines operated the Bombardier regional jet, said “there were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft.”

A US Army official said the helicopter involved was a Black Hawk carrying three soldiers — their status currently unknown. They had been on a “training flight,” a separate military spokesperson said in a statement.

Washington police said “there is no confirmed information on casualties at this time.”

However, a massive search and rescue operation was in progress, with divers visible in the glare of powerful lights as they plunged into the snow-lined Potomac to scour the wreckage of both aircraft.

We’re going to be out there as long as it takes, and we’re obviously trying to get to people as soon as possible, but we are going to recover our fellow citizens,” Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters.

Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly said at a press briefing that emergency crews, totaling about 300 people, were working in “extremely rough” conditions and gave little indication they expected to find anyone alive.

“We will re-evaluate where we are with the rescue operation in the morning, when we get a better sense of it,” Donnelly said.

“But we are still out there working, and we’re going to continue that throughout the night.”

Witness Ari Schulman was driving home when he saw what he described as “a stream of sparks” overhead.

“Initially I saw the plane and it looked fine, normal. It was right about to head over land,” he told CNN.

“Three seconds later, and at that point it was banked all the way to the right… I could see the underside of it, it was lit up a very bright yellow, and there was a stream of sparks underneath it,” Schulman added.

“It looked like a Roman candle.”

Trump criticizes traffic control
President Donald Trump said in an official statement that he had been “fully briefed” and said of any victims, “may God bless their souls.”

But less than four hours after the disaster — and while other officials stressed they were waiting for investigations to unfold — he returned to social media to critique air traffic control.

“The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“Why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the grounding of all planes at Reagan National and the airport was not due to reopen until 11:00 am (1600 GMT) Thursday.

American Airlines’ chief executive issued a video statement in which he expressed “deep sorrow”, while US Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas called the collision “nothing short of a nightmare.”

Crowded airspace
Questions were expected to focus on how a passenger plane with modern collision-avoidance technology and nearby traffic controllers could collide with a military aircraft over the nation’s capital.

The airspace around Washington is often crowded, with planes coming in low over the city to land at Reagan airport and helicopters — military, civilian and carrying senior politicians or officials — buzzing about both day and night.

The same airport was the scene of a deadly crash in January 1982 when Air Florida Flight 90, a Boeing 737, took off but quickly plummeted, hitting the 14th Street bridge and crashing through the ice into the Potomac River. Seventy-eight people died.

Investigators concluded the pilot had failed to activate sufficient de-icing procedures.

The last major fatal US air accident was in 2009, when Continental Flight 3407 from New Jersey to Buffalo, New York crashed and killed all 49 people aboard.

Two Killed As Lagos Building Under Construction Collapses

0

The two-storey building under construction collapsed on Tuesday with five workers injured and some others still trapped in the rubble.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment while the remains of the dead have been evacuated.

“So far, the bodies of an adult male and a young boy were recovered and five adult males with serious injuries have been rescued and taken to the hospital.

“Information indicates that more people are likely to still be under the rubble,” the NEMA official said in a statement.

According to Farinloye, search and rescue operations were ongoing. He said the immediate cause of the incident was unknown while further investigation would be conducted.

Also, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the sad development in a statement but said only one person was confirmed dead and four adults injured.

LASEMA boss Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said, “The agency, alongside other stakeholders, was able to rescue the victims while the agency’s heavy-duty equipment has been dispatched.”

He also said search and rescue operations were still ongoing and further developments would be communicated.

Boniface to earn €15m per season as Al Nassr, Leverkusen agree deal

0

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is set to complete his move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr with a bumper net salary of €15m per season after the Saudi club and Bayer Leverkusen reached an agreement on Tuesday, Arise Afrika reports.

Al Nassr’s interest in the Nigerian striker didn’t take too long to become feasible as the talks were concluded in two days.

Sky Germany reporter, Florian Plettenberg, confirmed the details after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano announced the commencement of negotiations.

“Victor Boniface will join Al Nassr FC with immediate effect,” he posted via X.

“Total agreement with Bayer 04 Leverkusen now has been reached about a final transfer fee of more than €60m. A verbal agreement was made. €15m net per season as revealed. The 24 y/o striker has already passed his medical with Al-Nassr.”

Both clubs began talks for the transfer of the player on Monday and the negotiations continued on Tuesday as Al Nassr believe that Boniface could be the right option to support Cristiano Ronaldo in attack after the exit of Anderson Talisca.

Reports from Germany also indicate that Boniface missed the club’s training on Tuesday ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Sparta Prague.

According to Kicker, Leverkusen said Boniface was missing because the attacker was “in conversations with another club.”

Excusing him from the training might also be a caution on their part so as not to send him back to the sidelines before the move, having just recovered from a thigh injury.

Leverkusen coach, Xabi Alonso, also confirmed the development during his pre-match interview on Tuesday.

“There is this situation, and I understand that. There are discussions with the club. We have to wait. We’re preparing for the game without Boni of course”.

Boniface’s move will see his annual salary go up fivefold, as he is currently on over €3m per season before signing a contract extension until 2029.

As suggested by Kicker, Leverkusen received €60m, €10m more than their asking price of €50m for the player.

They will now look for a potential replacement with six days left in the transfer window.

Leverkusen are expected to bring in Mario Hermoso and Emiliano Buendia as both are expected to arrive on loan to boost the German champions’ numbers in defence and attack.

Boniface joined Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around €20m plus add-ons, signing a contract at Leverkusen until 2028.

He was one of the key players to their double triumph last season, scoring 21 goals plus 10 assists in 34 games across all competitions.

This season, he has eight goals and one assist across 15 games.

The Nigerian has just recovered from a thigh injury which has kept him out since November 2024.

A REJOINDER: GO, FACE YOUR ALLEGED CRIMINAL CHARGES : NZE OBIEFULE ALLEGEDLY EVADES ARREST AGAIN, AS HE RISKS 10 YEARS IMPRISONMENT

0

It is only a good tree-bearing fruit that attract stones. We are therefore not surprised that Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule, The Anoruo 1 Of Umuezeanoruo Eziama, has become a subject to be tossed around, left, right and Centre, on social and print media by those who woefully lost at the Court of Appeal, in the Ezeship stool tussle of Umuezeanoruo Eziama community in Nkwerre local government area of Imo State.

Ordinarily, one wouldn’t have bothered to respond to the organized blackmail on the integrity and credibility of His Royal Majesty, but because we do not want the public to be deceived by the narratives in the false publication in circulation on social media and local Newspapers, we have decided to step forward with the undiluted facts, which are verifiable. However, bad losers are finding it very difficult to swallow the bitter pill of their loss at the Court of Appeal.

Years ago, precisely in 2011, during the tale end of the Governor Ikedi Godson Ohakim’s administration, Umuezeanoruo Eziama community in Nkwerre local government area of Imo State was granted Autonomous status. This was followed by the tussle of who becomes the traditional ruler of the community. A Committee was set up to screen those who had indicated interest, with terms of reference given as a module for the selection of qualified person/persons. While the Imo State Government Traditional Chieftaincy Act pegged the minimum qualification at School Certificate level, the screening Committee disregarded it and came up with a minimum qualification of a university degree.

Again, because there were vested interest, the then President General of the Town Union, Mr Lawrence Nwadike, reportedly manipulated the screening Committee and directed them to disqualify, by screening out, all other persons in the race, leaving only Mr Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho. This was clandestinely carried out. It should be noted that the purported university degree certificate which was presented by Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho was never verified. Even at that, proper election was not conducted. Because the screening Committee was on an evil mission, the Degree certificate presented by Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefula was tagged “fake”, with no cogent and verifiable reason, except to execute a hatchet job, as directed by the then President General of the Community Town Union, Mr Lawrence Nwadike and his cohorts.

Nevertheless, realizing the unpatriotic action the Committee members committed, a member of the Committee, Mr Kelvin Agoha, reportedly confessed, in the open, what transpired and how he and his other Committee members were cajoled, with mouth watering promises, to disqualify every other person, and confirming only Mr Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho.

Again, before the Autonomous status came, Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule and Mr Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho were from Nduho Na Ogbo. Before Autonomy was granted, His Royal Majesty found himself in Nduho while Chief Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho was Umuogbo, where his father, grandfather and great-grandfather also came from. But because of his insatiable taste and quest for the Ezeship stool, he became unstable and couldn’t rightfully proclaim his actual village identity.

Therefore, not satisfied with the clandestine manner he was screened out, Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule approached the law court, as the last hope of the common man. And after the rigorous process of seeking for justice, Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule got the judgement of Appeal Court in his favour.

Since he lost at the Appeal Court, Mr Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho has not been himself. He has continued to create tension in the community, instigating crisis of unimaginable proportion, to the extent that the Imo State Police Command (Tiger-Base) intervened.

On the allegation that Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule intimidates people using guns, the general public should observe and note that a drowning man can allege anything just to stay afloat, hence these shameless losers have been circulating AI generated pictures and videos, purporting them to be the humble gentleman. Proper scrutiny will unveil the truth.

On the issue of Police invitations that came from Zone 9 on 01/01/2025, Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule was asked to report on the 10th of January 2025, which he did as an Honourable man of peace, and addressed all the purported issues raised against him by Mr Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho and his cohorts. Graciously, he returned home same day. Just last friday, 24th January 2025, another invitation came from the Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police, asking him to report to their office on 30th January 2025. The Police never issued arrest warrant on the person and personality of His Royal Majesty.

Where then does “evading” arrest come from? This is indeed laughable and should be seen as the outbursts of a frustrated loser and his cohorts. Nevertheless, we will live to see the end to these orchestrated drama and sponsored publications aimed at damaging the credibility and integrity of Hrm Eze Emeka Andrew Obiefule, as his legal team are on top of the matter to formally handle these false publications.

While assuring the public that His Royal Majesty has the support of the people of Umuezeanoruo Eziama in bringing about peace, unity and progress in the community, he is presently preoccupied in galvanizing massive support for the purposeful leadership of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma and to ensure that the 3-R Shared Prosperity Administration succeeds resoundingly. Any other thing should be seen as mere distraction.
