Uzodimma Decries Moral Decadence at Imo State University

0

….Directs Board to clean-up the system

The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has decried the moral decadence at the Imo State University Owerri, charging the Governing Board to be more pragmatic in finding solutions to the endemic problem currently besetting the institution.

Uzodimma gave the charge when he received the Chairman and members of the Institution’s Governing Board in his office in Government House, Owerri on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The Governor, who lamented the rate of corruption in the school, maintained that the old order must change, adding, “what is very endemic is corruption and lack of commitment on the part of the staff.”

He wondered why the School will give admission to students who cannot graduate after four years of completing their academic programme and called for thorough investigation into such malpractices as well as streamline the admission process.

He further charged the Board to develop a work plan that can encourage investment in the university and equally address the moral decadence by taking care of the students.

Uzodimma assured that the State Government is willing to provide the needed intervention to the school, and incentives to the staff provided the environment is right and clean for investors to come in. “I can even allow you fix your salary, but there must be money. It is not charity.”

He further explained that if there is a functional system, investors may come under Public Private Partnership (PPP) and boost the revenue of the school. This, he said, “will provide a win-win situation and everybody will be happy.”

Uzodimma resolved that automation and computerisation is the way out, to get a system that can give accurate data that provide nominal roll of students and number of staff on the payroll of government.

He therefore enjoined the Board to do a needs assessment to determine what the cost of running the school will be and the revenue capacity in order to give the university a firm footing.

He charged the Board and Management to go back to the drawing board and seek proper solution to the problems of the school. “Any sick man who goes to the hospital and starts taking injection without laboratory test is taking a risk.”

Earlier in his address, the Chairman Imo State University Governing Board, Rev. Fr. Prof. Philip Anyaehie Ogbonna thanked the Governor for finding them worthy of the appointment, noting that the visit was to intimate him on the progress so far made by the Board since their inauguration in January, 2025.

Rev. Fr. Ogbonna disclosed that the Board has made some findings and came up with insight that will propel the institution to greater height. They include, but not limited to the overhaul of the system, accreditation of Colleges of Medicine and Engineering, staff promotion and welfare, employment, among others.

He requested the Governor to help them computerise the University system to check corrupt practices as well as encourage digital skills training in the school, a way that will guarantee employment of the students after graduation.

Other Board members present include; the Founder of Zinox Computers, Mr. Leo Stan Eke, Rt. Hon Chums Nnaji, Hon. Godwin Esom Obodo, Pharmacist Chuks Okoronkwo and Princess Nkechi Mbachu.

The Vice Chancellor Imo State University, Prof. Uche Chukwumaeze, led other Principal Officers of the University to the meeting.

Nigeria Hotel Association Imo State Chapter Boss Bows Out In Style

0

The chairman of the Nigeria Hotel Association, NHA, Imo State Chapter, Mr Chima Chukwunyere, has formally announced his resignation from the position with barely one year left before the expiration of his tenure.

He called on hotel owners to take their proper place in the association as the legal rightful owners of NHA.

Chukwunyere made this known in a valedictory speech he rendered during an elaborate send-forth organized in his honor by the association at the City Cruz Hotel and Suites, New Owerri.

The chairman who preferred to be addressed as ‘Chief Servant’ of Imo NHA, disclosed that he will be clocking 70 years this coming December and pointed out that his resignation was for personal reasons, having held the office for eight (8) consecutive years.

Chukwunyere, the MD/CEO of Domino Paramount Hotel, Owerri, who revealed that he joined the association in 1979, noted with utmost dismay that the greatest challenge facing the association has been the leadership tussle between the directors and managers of hotels.

According to him, the power tussle left the leadership in the hands of the managers for many decades and promoted mediocrity, impunity, recklessness, and in-fighting, among other vices in NHA.

His words, “The biggest challenge of the association is leadership, and that is why the leadership stayed in the hands of our managers for decades. I came into office in March 2017. I inherited N88.00, gross indiscipline, recklessness, conspiracy against MDs, insult, false accusations/allegations, and sabotage from some managers who call themselves cabals.”

Recounting his experience as the head of the association for nearly a decade, Chukwunyere revealed, “My efforts to correct the impression that the association does not belong to our managers were vehemently opposed and resisted, and the battle is still on even as I handed over to a new person.

“My eight years of leadership was stormy all through by two deadly squads, the Cabals, and the revenue touts. On all fronts, the power of my God prevailed for me. The Nigeria Hotel Association, the Imo chapter, belongs to hotel owners only, and the Directors are allowed to send their representatives if they are not available. This is contained in
ARTICLE 7A in respect to full membership of the Association.

“History has been made today because, for the 1st time, a serving Chief Servant stepped down and is outlined in this manner.

“We have resisted revenue touts from invading our hotels and succeeded in protecting our members from unnecessary extortion mess,.I intervened in MD, and their manager’s issues, and God won the battle.

My threats to shut down hotels in December 2020 compelled the governor to disengage all the revenue consultants and touts and in September 2022, the governor invited me for a meeting to avoid the second shutdown.

“All the revenue consultants and touts who looted hotels were compelled to return them. There have been allegations and accusations from the cabals that led to two audits.

“My advice to Directors is that before they engage any manager to run their hotels they should endeavor to carry out background checks with the Association to determine if the person’s conduct in their previous hotels is good enough.”

Responding, the acting chairman of Imo NHA, Chief Josephat Esomonu Nwosu, applauded his predecessor for the numerous achievements recorded under his watch and wished him better days ahead.

Several hotel owners and other dignitaries who graced the occasion poured encomium on Mr. Chukwunyere for his commitment while in office despite distractions and wished him well in future endeavors.

In his goodwill message, Frank Nneji, the MD/CEO of Mayfair Suites and Rapido Ventures Owerri, congratulated Chukwunyere for a remarkably successful tenure despite the daunting challenges.

Nneji used the occasion to clarify that the Nigeria Hotel Association, NHA, is exclusively a body for the owners of hotels, not managers, as erroneously insinuated in the past, and advised directors to prioritize the growth and progress of the association.

The event attracted several dignitaries, namely, Hon. Henry Igbomezie, Chief Ifeanyi, the Commissioner of Police, the State Director of DSS, the FRSC Commandant, and the National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC. Represented by Engr. David Chukwuaja, Imo State Commissioner for Tourism, Barr. Jerry Egemba and Ikechukwu Anyanwu Publisher Arise Africa Who represented Slavan Suites and Apartments.

IMO ASSEMBLY URGES IMO STATE GOVERNMENT  TO SOURCE AND PROCURE IMPROVED HIGH YIELD SEEDLINGS FOR FARMERS FOR 2025 BUMPER HARVEST SEASON

0

In view of the motion moved by former Speaker, and Member Representing Obowo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to direct the Ministry of Agriculture to immediately source, and procure improved and high yielding seedlings for distribution to farmers in the State.

This according to them is to prepare the state for a bountiful harvest season this year.

The motion which was presented by the Obowo lawmaker on Tuesday was co-sponsored by ten other lawmakers.

To ensure there is a bumper harvest in Imo State in the 2025 harvest season, thereby crashing the high cost of food, reducing the cost of living and improving the living standards of the people, the Imo State House Of Assembly has urged the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to direct the Ministry Of Agriculture to source and procure improved and high yield seedlings for distribution to farmers, preparatory for a 2025 bumper harvest season.

This was the outcome of the Plenary activity on Tuesday 18/03/2025.

Moving the Motion, the Member Representing Obowo State Constituency, Rt Honourable Barrister Kennedy Chiedozie Ibeh (Nke-Nke Enyi), explained that since the rains have begun to come, and farmers have started going to their farms, there is need to assist them with improved and high yield seedlings for a bumper harvest later in the year, especially, considering the current high cost of food stuffs, which have worsened the living conditions of citizens.

According to Rt Honourable Kennedy Ibeh, the Motion aims to address hunger and economic recession, which if properly looked into, will go a long way to solve food insecurity situation. In his words, the Obowo lawmaker stated that, *“the deliberate sourcing of high yield seedlings can improve crop yield and harvest in Imo State, thereby reducing the cost of living and improving the living standards of the people in the State”.

The prolific lawmaker while noting the interest and efforts of Governor Uzodimms’s administration in promoting sustainable Agricultural Development and Reduction of Poverty in the State further said that *“from Nigerian Bureau Of Statistics, 70% of Imo Citizens are involved in farming. Let us therefore, as a Government, empower our people with the right high yield seedlings, for planting, so as to have bumper harvest, in order to fight hunger, increase Imo Gross Domestic Product (GDP), create employment and reduce cost of living”.

7. Hon Barrister Emeka Kingsley Ozurumba(Isu).

8. Hon Chief James Uba Esile (Onuimo).

9. Hon Okey Ernest Udeze (Ideato North).

In their respective submissions, they commended the Chief Sponsor for the Motion, noting that improved seedlings is the key to have bumper harvest. According to the supporting lawmakers, responsibility should be given to persons to ensure food security in the State and avert further slide in poor harvests, as the fulcrum of the Motion centered on (1) Reduction of Hunger and (2) Reduction in Inflation.

Satisfied with contributions from Honourable Members, the Speaker, Rt Honourable Chike Olemgbe, put it to Vote and it was unanimously adopted. Thereafter, he Ruled as follows :

Be It Resolved By This Honourable House To Urge His Excellency The Governor Of Imo State, To Direct The Ministry Of Agriculture To Immediately Source And Procure Improved And High Yield Seedlings For Distribution To Farmers In Imo State Preparatory For A 2025 Bumper Harvest Season.

BREAKING: Anambra Guber Hopeful Valentine Ozigbo Dumps Labour Party

0

Valentine Ozigbo, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2021 Anambra State governorship election and a key contender for the 2025 race, has officially resigned from the Labour Party (LP).

His departure from the party has fueled speculations ahead of the upcoming elections.

Ozigbo’s resignation comes amid growing rumours suggesting that he may soon announce his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports indicate that he recently held a closed-door meeting with APC zonal leaders in Anambra South, where he allegedly criticized 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, describing him as lacking strong leadership qualities.

Among those vying for the Labour Party’s governorship ticket are John Nwosu and former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Dr. George Moghalu.

Ozigbo initially joined the Labour Party in August 2022, following his departure from the PDP.

Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs as tests show ‘complex picture,’ Vatican says

0

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized since last week, was found to have pneumonia in both lungs following a CT scan on Tuesday, the Vatican said, with tests continuing to indicate “a complex picture” for one of the oldest popes in the church’s history.

“The control chest CT scan that the Holy Father underwent this afternoon … demonstrated the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further pharmacological therapy,” the Vatican wrote Tuesday.

The 88-year-old pontiff – who has long been plagued by a string of lung-related medical struggles – had received the Eucharist in the morning and “alternated rest with prayer and reading texts” on Tuesday, the Vatican statement said.

On Monday, the Vatican said Francis had a “polymicrobial infection” of his respiratory tract that will require his treatment in hospital to be changed.

“The results of the tests carried out in recent days and today have demonstrated a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract that has led to a further change in therapy,” the Vatican said in the Monday statement.

“All the tests carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require adequate hospitalization.”

On Tuesday morning, Francis awoke after a peaceful night, ate breakfast and read newspapers, according to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni.

The Vatican on Tuesday said despite the onset of pneumonia in both of his lungs, “Pope Francis is in good spirits.”

“He gives thanks for the closeness he feels at this moment and asks, with a grateful heart, that we continue to pray for him,” the statement said.

Polymicrobial infections are acute and chronic diseases that can be caused by a combination of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, according to the US National Insititutes of Health.

Prior to the pneumonia diagnosis, worshipers outside the Vatican expressed concern over the pope’s condition and wished him a steady recovery. “We certainly wish for him to get better very quickly,” Rev. Tyler Carter, a US priest, told Reuters. “He is our father and our shepherd, and so we want his continued health and blessing.”

Manuel Rossi, a visitor from Milan, northern Italy, said: “I am 18 years old so I have seen few popes in my life, and am very close to him.

“I hope he recovers as soon as possible,” added Rossi.

‘He is more tired’
Francis tried to complete routine obligations on the first two days of hospitalization, according to Bruni.

On Friday and Saturday, the pope spoke on the phone to Rev. Gabriel Romanelli and his assistant, Father Yusuf Asad, in Gaza City, northern Gaza – who have been in frequent communication since Israel launched its war following the October 7 attacks.

After more than 15 months of “massacres, violence, fear, and hunger” in the Palestinian enclave, the pontiff called his colleagues “to check in,” Vatican News reported on Monday.

“We heard his voice. It is true, he is more tired,” reflected Romanelli. “He himself said, ‘I have to take care of myself.’ But you could hear the clear voice, he listened to us well.”

Pope Francis leads the vespers at Saint Paul Outside the Walls, in Rome on January 25.

Pope will not lead Sunday’s Angelus prayer, unclear how long he will stay in hospital
He did not lead the weekly Angelus prayer on Sunday – only the second time that this has happened in his almost 12-year-long papacy.

The pope was checked into a hospital in Rome last week for “diagnostic tests” relating to a respiratory tract infection, the Vatican added. They later confirmed he was in Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in the Italian capital. All his public events will be canceled until Saturday, Bruni said.

Doctors had prescribed “complete rest” for the pope, who had engaged in an intense round of meetings and public events until his hospitalization.

When he was younger, the Argentine leader endured severe pneumonia and had part of one lung removed. More recently, he suffered two falls in recent months and has been seen using a wheelchair to help alleviate his restricted mobility.

Francis also has diverticulitis, a common condition that can cause the inflammation or infection of the colon. In 2021, he had surgery to remove part of his colon.

“We hope that the recovery will happen soon, and that he can return to St. Peter’s to continue his mission and work,” added Romanelli, the priest in Gaza City.

Mazi Ikenna Aniche Marks Four Years of Survival with Reflection, Gratitude

0

Honors the Less Privileged, Expresses Profound Gratitude to Medical Experts

By Dan Opara

Thursday, February 6, 2025, marked exactly four years since a remarkable Imo son and humanitarian, High Chief Ikenna Aniche (Nke Nke Enyi Izuogu na Iheme Gburu Gburu 1-12), survived a near-fatal auto crash.

The tragic accident, which occurred on Saturday, February 6, 2021, involved his SUV and a reckless, intoxicated truck driver who dangerously took a one-way lane at the ever-busy Wetheral Road by the Government House Roundabout in Owerri.

In the wake of this life-altering event, Chief Aniche made it a personal mandate to annually commemorate the day as a “Celebration of Life” under the auspices of the Nke Nke Enyi Izuogu Foundation for the Needy and the Aged.

He acknowledges the day as a profound reminder of the gift of life and an opportunity to give back to society, especially to those in need.

Speaking on last Thursday morning after visiting several less privileged homes in Imo State, the Group Managing Director of Double Shillings Auto, a leading auto firm in Nigeria, reaffirmed his commitment to living a life of purpose.

He described the annual celebration as a solemn reminder of life’s fragility, acknowledging that while many had aspirations for the year, unforeseen circumstances had crushed their dreams and taken loved ones away.

“Every 6th of February serves as a stark reminder that life and death are two sides of the same coin.

By God’s grace, I am still on the side of life, and I am deeply humbled by the simple but invaluable gifts of existence and good health,” he remarked.

Chief Aniche vowed to continue honoring the memory of those who passed before and after his incident, dedicating his life to uplifting the less privileged and embracing each new day with gratitude.

Later that evening, a private survival party was held at his palatial Owerri residence, attended by a select circle of confidants, dignitaries, and allies.

Despite its exclusivity, clusters of neighbors joined in, adding to the warmth and camaraderie of the event.

The celebration was a fusion of class and gratitude, with music crooner DJ Hypeman Tamuno Sunny B setting the mood for an unforgettable evening.

Guests were treated to a lavish array of hors d’oeuvres, mouthwatering delicacies, and an abundance of premium champagne, cognacs, exotic wines, and spirits.

Dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans, the real estate magnate, millennial auto merchant, and humanitarian personally attended to each guest, ensuring a night of comfort, laughter, and shared memories.

In his closing remarks, High Chief Ikenna Aniche expressed profound gratitude to the medical experts who played crucial roles in his survival and recovery.

He specifically recognized:

Dr. Chinedu Barry Iheukwumere and his proactive team at Bob Memorial Hospital, Owerri, for their exceptional efforts in saving his life.

Dr. Gerald Oguzie, Consultant Orthopaedic/Trauma/Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty Surgeon, for ensuring that his right hand and leg were not amputated.

Dr. Humble Evuchaiwe of Humility Hospital, for his unwavering availability and medical interventions at every critical moment.

Chief Aniche’s journey is a testament to resilience, gratitude, and the power of giving back.

His unwavering commitment to philanthropy and the celebration of life continues to inspire many across Imo State and beyond.

As he marked this fourth anniversary of survival, he reminded everyone of the priceless value of life, the significance of kindness, and the importance of living each day with purpose.

Indeed, February 6th will forever remain a sacred date—not just for Mazi Ikenna Aniche, but for all who have been touched by his generosity and enduring spirit.

EPL: Marmoush Scores Hat-Trick As Man City Crush Newcastle, Enter Top Four

0

Omar Marmoush scored his first Manchester City goals with a first-half hat-trick to beat Newcastle 4-0 and fire Pep Guardiola’s men back into the Premier League’s top four on Saturday.

The Egyptian was in scintillating form as City recovered from their late Champions League collapse to lose to Real Madrid 3-2 at home in midweek.

The English champions have a mountain to climb when they visit Madrid on Wednesday if they are to reach the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition for the 12th consecutive season.

But Marmoush’s explosion gives some cause for optimism as Newcastle were blown away inside the opening 33 minutes.

The match had been billed as a clash between the Premier League’s two top strikers as Golden Boot rivals Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak went head-to-head.

However, they were both overshadowed as Marmoush announced his arrival to the English game.

The 26-year-old scored 20 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt this season before making a £59 million ($72.6 million) move to Manchester in January

City were keen to add more goalscoring threats to support Haaland and the early signs are promising that the Norwegian and Marmoush can dovetail effectively.

Guardiola made six changes to freshen up his side between the Madrid double header with Marmoush one of those to come into the side.

Ederson was at fault for City’s late collapse from 2-1 to 3-2 down against the European champions on Tuesday, but made amends with his third assist of the season.

Kieran Trippier was caught underneath the Brazilian goalkeeper’s booming kick upfield and Marmoush had the simple task to lob the stranded Martin Dubravka.

That goal continued City’s run of scoring in their last 33 Premier League games against the Magpies.

Five minutes later, it was 2-0 when Ilkay Gundogan fed Marmoush inside the area, who cut inside before his deflected effort found the bottom corner.

Savinho’s pace and trickery down the right was another major positive for Guardiola and he created the third by skipping past Lewis Hall and squaring for Marmoush to fire home from close range.

City’s fragility at defending leads this season was never seriously tested as the visitors suffered another damaging defeat to their chances of a return to the Champions League next season.

Either side of reaching next month’s League Cup final, Eddie Howe’s men have lost three of their last four Premier League games to slip to seventh.

City, on the other hand, climb back into pole position for Champions League qualification despite their drastic dip in standards this season that will see an unprecedented run of four consecutive league titles almost certainly come to an end.

James McAtee came off the bench to add the fourth six minutes from time when the midfielder turned in Haaland’s flick on from a Gundogan corner.

But there was a worrying scene for City as Haaland had to be replaced in the closing stages after receiving treatment on a knee injury.

FG Takes Full Ownership Of Keystone Bank

0

The Federal Government has taken full ownership of Keystone Bank.

This is according to a statement by the bank posted on its X handle on Tuesday evening.

It read, “Keystone Bank Limited wishes to clarify media report of a judgement by the Lagos State Special Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, regarding the status of the former shareholders of the bank: Sigma Golf Nigeria Limited and Alhaji Umaru H. Modibbo.

“Recall that on January 10, 2024, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the dissolution of the previous Board and Management of the Bank for corporate governance breaches. The CBN followed this action with the appointment of a new Board and Management for the Bank.

“Subsequently the Federal Government through the EFCC filed a court action at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, against the former owners challenging the acquisition of the bank. At the sitting of the court today, February 11, 2025, the court ordered the forfeiture of the shares of the Bank previously held by the shareholders in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The implication of this judgment is that Keystone Bank Limited is now fully owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

Describing the development as a “significant milestone in our journey,” the bank said the move is “paving the way for a seamless recapitalization process”.

“With this clarity, we are well-positioned for sustained growth, stronger partnerships, and enhanced profitability. Keystone Bank continues to strengthen its balance sheet while delivering exceptional value to its teeming stakeholders,” the statement read.

“The bank maintains a strong financial position, consistently fulfilling all its obligations and adhering to all regulatory requirements. We assure our customers that the bank remains safe, healthy, strong, and resilient.”

Anambra security squad, Agunaechemba, arrests Akwa Okuku

0

In line with its ongoing campaigns at smoking out criminals and those engaged in suspicious activities, Anambra vigilante security network, Agunaechemba, has allegedly arrested controversial native doctor, Chukwudozie Nwangwu, commonly known as Akwa Okuku

Our reporter gathered that he was allegedly picked up on allegations of allegedly preparing charms (Okeite) for the kidnappers masquerading as yahoo boys, terrorising Anambra State.

Akwa Okuku, fully pronounced as Akwa Okuku tiwara aki (an egg that breaks the coconut), because of his perceived invincibility, is based in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

A video of Akwa Okuku allegedly being interrogated by an official of the security network, confirmed his arrest.

His followers claim that he is known for his work in business progress, favour, security, otherworldly purification, visa approval, marital issues, and many more.

Social media patrons associate him with regular flaunting of luxurious outfits such as hotel and exotic cars. Last year, reports were rife of his alleged abduction by unknown gunmen, an incident critics insisted was orchestrated by him.

His arrest comes on the heels of similar breakthrough by Agunechemba operatives on Thursday, in Owere-Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state in which nine individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping and ritual killings were nabbed during a joint operation by the Security Squad and local vigilantes.
