At least 20 Nigerian soldiers killed in attack on remote army base

0

At least 20 Nigerian soldiers have been reportedly killed in a suspected attack by fighters from the ISIL affiliate in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The attackers targeted an army base in the remote Malam-Fatori town in the northeastern Borno state on Friday, with a surviving soldier saying the attack lasted for more than three hours.

Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters mainly operate in Borno and have attacked both security forces and civilians, killing and displacing tens of thousands of people.

Reuters news agency, citing security sources and residents, on Sunday said a commanding officer was among those killed after ISWAP members arrived on gun trucks and attacked the Nigerian Army’s 149th Battalion in Malam-Fatori, gateway to the border with Niger.

“They rained bullets everywhere,” one of the surviving soldiers told Reuters by phone, adding that the troops were taken by surprise.

“We tried so much to repel the attacks and after more than three hours of gun duel, they overpowered us, killing our commanding officer, a lieutenant colonel,” the soldier said, declining to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

He said 20 soldiers died while several were injured.

Residents who left the town said some of the attackers were seen in Malam-Fatori as late as Saturday night.

Malakaka Bukar, a member of the local militia recruited to help the army, said the fighters also burned buildings, forcing some residents to flee the town.

“They preached to some of the residents,” said Bukar.

ISWAP split from the mainstream Boko Haram in 2016 to become the dominant armed faction in northeastern Nigeria.

Although weakened by military assaults and internal fighting over the years, Boko Haram and ISWAP have stepped up attacks in Borno since the turn of the year, killing dozens of farmers and fishermen in a series of raids.

The 15-year-old conflict has killed nearly 40,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast.

The violence spilled into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, leading to the creation of a regional force to fight the armed groups.

UN chief calls for Rwandan forces to leave DRC as rebels press offensive

0

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has called on Rwandan forces to withdraw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and halt support for M23 fighters advancing on the key city of Goma in the country’s east.

Guterres “reiterates his strongest condemnation of the M23 armed group’s ongoing offensive and advances towards Goma in North Kivu with the support of the Rwanda Defence Forces,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Sunday.

“He calls on the M23 to immediately cease all hostile actions and withdraw from occupied areas. He further calls on the Rwanda Defence Forces to cease support to the M23 and withdraw from DRC territory,” the statement said.

The DRC and the UN accuse Rwanda of backing the M23 (March 23 Movement) rebels, an accusation that Kigali denies.

At an emergency UN Security Council meeting later on Sunday, the DRC demanded sanctions against Rwanda, saying its forces had crossed into its territory in what amounted to a “declaration of war.”

“More Rwandan troops have crossed the 12th and 13th border posts between Goma (in the DRC) and Gisenyi (in Rwanda), entering our territory in broad daylight in an open and deliberate violation of our national sovereignty,” Congolese Foreign minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner said.

“This is a frontal assault, a declaration of war that no longer hides behind diplomatic artifice,” she said, and called for the Security Council to “impose targeted sanctions including asset freezes and travel bans not only against identified members of the chain of command of the Rwandan armed forces, but also against the political decision-makers responsible for this aggression.”

France and the United Kingdom also pressured Rwanda over its role in recent fighting around the city of Goma in eastern DRC.

France’s UN ambassador called for Rwanda to withdraw its troops from DRC territory, while the UK called for an end to attacks on peacekeepers by M23 rebels receiving support from Rwanda.

The meeting was held a day earlier than planned after three UN peacekeepers from Uruguay and South Africa were killed in eastern DRC.

Seven other South African soldiers and three from Malawi serving in a separate Southern African mission were also killed this week, South African and UN authorities said.

Chelsea are taking a huge risk by chasing £60m problem child Alejandro Garnacho – Man Utd should jump at the chance to make pure profit on stalling Cristiano Ronaldo wannabe

0

The Blues are preparing to formalise their interest in the winger, despite having concerns over his obvious attitude problem

When it recently emerged that Manchester United are prepared to cash in on Alejandro Garnacho in the near future, there was something of an inevitability about Chelsea’s name being in the frame. Lo and behold, two weeks later, the Blues are set to formalise their interest in the winger with an opening offer – and as it stands they are the only club in the running.

Both United’s openness to selling one of the gems of their academy and Chelsea’s willingness to spend big on yet another winger have raised eyebrows, as the Red Devils target a pure-profit sale for more than £50 million ($62m) to ease their financial troubles.

In the current state of affairs, there is the unshakeable feeling that this is a deal that undoubtedly favours INEOS, Ruben Amorim and Co., with the west Londoners rolling the dice by potentially taking the fiery Argentine off their hands.

Man Utd’s PSR problem
Man Utd’s financial situation means their hands could be tied when it comes to selling off their academy gems; it was reported earlier in January that the Red Devils would consider offers for Garnacho and fellow Carrington graduate Kobbie Mainoo as they risk breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

United part-owners INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who have already made a number of brutal cuts, have even written to fans insisting the club must “act now” to avoid a violation.

“If we do not act now, we are in danger of falling to comply with PSR/FFP requirements,” a letter read. “We are currently making a significant loss each year – totalling over £300m in the past three years. This is not sustainable.

“We will have to make some difficult choices. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club.”

A matter of months ago, the idea of selling Garnacho would have been unthinkable, but the timing of the 2025 January transfer window probably plays into United’s hands as they look to avoid a significant backlash.

The 20-year-old is out of form and out of favour under Ruben Amorim, with the fanbase largely backing the manager’s decision to overlook him in recent weeks and growing increasingly frustrated at his inconsistent performances and a perceived poor attitude – with some even prepared to see him leave.

After forcing Colombia to back down, White House claims America is respected again

0

Donald Trump claimed an early victory for a coercive foreign policy based on tariffs and hard power on Sunday after announcing Colombia had backed down in a dispute over migrant repatriation flights.

The president had earlier unveiled swift and painful punishment, including huge tariffs, on the US ally in his most overt attempt yet to make an example of a nation that crossed him and to assert dominance in the Western Hemisphere.

The crisis erupted when Colombian President Gustavo Petro blocked US military flights carrying undocumented migrants from landing, in a hitch for the mass deportation operation meant to honor one of Trump’s most high-profile campaign promises.

The US president jumped at a chance to show his supporters how tough he can be and to demonstrate to other countries in Latin America the price of resisting migrant repatriations.

After hours of tensions with Bogota, the White House said Colombia had agreed to accept migrant flights, including on military aircraft, and that tariffs would be held off pending its implementation of the deal.

“Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement late Sunday. “President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.”

Colombia’s foreign minister soon confirmed that US deportation flights had resumed. Petro’s reversal represents a concession to US power and to Trump’s aggressive personal style. It is also likely to embolden administration officials who see tariff threats not simply as a traditional device in trade disputes but as a tool to intimidate other nations, including longtime US allies, across a broader set of issues.

Still, the spat with Colombia was also a reminder of how Trump’s hardline approach will cause massive global disruption. The US president has already browbeaten Canada and Mexico over border issues, sought to force Denmark to sell Greenland, and threatened to take back the Panama Canal.

Four years of such tactics could harm US global relationships and harden attitudes to Americans among foreign populations. The Colombia dispute quickly got the attention of China, which is seeking to increase its influence in Washington’s backyard — underscoring the potential downside for the United States if Trump chooses incessant confrontation that alienates key regional nations.

Trump is wielding power all over the map
Trump’s victory over Colombia capped the first week of his presidency, during which he used intimidation as a device to stamp his power on the United States at home and to sharply change the nation’s path abroad.

On Sunday, for instance, Trump’s new administration launched a deportation blitz in Chicago that will spread countrywide in the latest highly visible sign of his desire to quickly get results.

White House border czar Tom Homan told CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez Sunday that the new multiagency approach on immigration enforcement was a “game-changer.”

Today’s operation was all of government. President Trump has put all of government on this issue,” he said. Nearly 1,000 people were arrested in the sweep Sunday, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

This followed another stunning example of the new president wielding aggressive executive authority after he fired more than a dozen watchdog officials in key government agencies Friday night.

The purge is part of Trump’s attempts to remake the federal government in line with a long-held conservative belief that the federal bureaucracy always frustrates Republican presidents as they try to implement electoral mandates.

But since the agency inspectors general report waste, fraud and abuse to Congress, the move is being criticized by Democrats as an abuse of power and a sign of Trump’s cavalier regard for government ethics. And even some top Republicans complained the president should have complied with the law by giving Congress 30 days’ notice of the dismissals.

“I think he should have done that,” Sen. Lindsey Graham said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

But the South Carolina Republican asked: “Is it OK for him to put people in place that he thinks can carry out his agenda? Yes. He won the election. What do you expect him to do, just leave everybody in place in Washington before he got elected?” Graham added: “He feels like the government hasn’t worked very well for the American people.”

Colombia backs down on accepting deportees on military planes after Trump’s tariffs threats

0

Colombia has walked back from the brink of a damaging trade war with the United States, reaching an agreement on accepting deported migrants being returned on military planes, after a flurry of threats from President Donald Trump that included steep tariffs.

Colombia said Sunday evening it had agreed to “all of President Trump’s terms,” including the “unrestricted acceptance” of immigrants who entered the US illegally, after two US military planes carrying deportees were blocked from entering the country.

“We will continue to receive Colombians and Colombian women who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights,” Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said in a televised statement. He added that US deportation flights had resumed, and the Colombian presidential plane was being prepared to assist in repatriating citizens.

he White House also backed off its threat to impose tariffs unless Colombia “fails to honor this agreement,” adding other penalties, including visa sanctions and customs inspections of Colombian nationals and cargo ships, will stay in place until the first plane of Colombian deportees is successfully returned.

“Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again. President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States,” the White House said in a statement.

The announcement brings an end to a tumultuous weekend that threatened to raise coffee prices for American consumers and impact hundreds of thousands of Colombian workers. It’s also the first time Trump took major action against another country over his immigration policy since he took office last week.

The feud began early Sunday over the US miliary flights carrying deportees to Colombia. Documents reviewed by CNN show Colombia had previously approved the flights, though Colombian President Gustavo Petro disputed he had authorized them – and US officials claim the authorization was revoked once the planes were en route.

Petro blocked the planes from landing, accusing the US of treating Colombian migrants like criminals – prompting Trump to order steep tariffs on all Colombian imports, a travel ban for Colombian citizens, the revoking of visas for Colombian officials in the US, and suspending visa processing for both immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

The visa restrictions are particularly extraordinary as they are usually reserved for adversaries or individuals who have committed human rights abuses – while Colombia is a major non-NATO ally of the US, and for decades has been its closest partner in South America.

In response, Petro threatened retaliatory tariffs on the US and attacked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on social media, writing: “You will never see me burning a US flag or carrying out a raid to return handcuffed illegal immigrants to the US.”

By Sunday evening, the White House announced the two countries had reached their agreement.

The face-off also demonstrates the potential challenges facing other countries as they brace for Trump’s immigration crackdown – with the new president already threatening tariffs on Canada and Mexico over border issues. And the perceived early victory over Colombia seems to have emboldened some in the White House.

“You can’t go out there and publicly defy us in that way,” a Trump administration official told CNN. “We’re going to make sure the world knows they can’t get away with being nonserious and deceptive.”

Consequences of a trade war
Though a trade war may have been averted for now, the tit-for-tat threats highlighted the expensive fallout one could cause.

Colombia is not a major trading partner with the US, but its major exports include minerals, metals and coffee. Coffee prices have already shot higher over the past year, and tariffs could have made it even more expensive for American consumers.

And even if Trump walks back his threats against Colombia, he has promised across-the-board tariffs on other countries as soon as this week if they don’t move manufacturing to the US. Those tariffs could dramatically boost prices for Americans, because importers pay the tariffs and often pass the increased costs on to consumers.

Meanwhile, economic and foreign policy analysts also urged Colombia to avoid a diplomatic feud with the US. The Colombian Council on International Relations (CORI), a think tank of former foreign ministers and analysts, warned that commercial retaliation would only harm Colombia, and warned the country’s government to preserve its relationship with Washington.

The head of the Colombo-American Chamber of Commerce, Maria Claudia Lacouture, echoed those sentiments in a post on X, warning that US tariffs on Colombian products would have an immediate and devastating impact.

“In coffee alone, more than 500,000 families depend on this sector. In flower farming, thousands of single mothers would lose their livelihood. And we can continue adding sectors that will be affected,” she said.

Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula allegedly evades arrest

0

Go and face your criminal charges. Only criminals run on sighting security Agencies as Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula evades arrest, jumps Okada to escape, alleged

…*Faces criminal charges of illegal possession cum public discharge of firearm and abuse of Naira as he is wanted by the Police*.

Risks 10 years of Imprisonment or more

In what could be best described as a gestapo display of “street” talent , Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula from Ndihunogbo Village in Umuezeanoruo Eziama Autonomous Community, Nkwerre LGA who is involved in an Eze-ship tussle has once again allegedly evaded police arrest and he is at large.

Information had it that on the evening of Friday,24th January,2025, a detachment of Police Officers from Force headquarters, Abuja were deployed to Umuezeanoruo Eziama Autonomous Community, Nkwerre LGA, Imo State, detailed to arrest Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula in response to criminal charges against him as contained in the petition from his community including illegal possession of firearm (a pistol) which he uses to harass and intimidate people at will.

In the evening of the day, the Police officers trailed him to his house at Ndihunogbo Village, but on sighting them, allegedly , with the help of his personal security agents , he escaped from the house by mounting an Okada, commercial motorcyclist and escaped in a manner that best could only be done by someone who has special training in running away from security agencies.

The security agencies however left an invitation for him to honour or he will be declared wanted globally.

Recall that the same scenario took place a few weeks ago when he was also wanted by the Police authority from Zone 9 Umuahia,Abia State during which it was alleged that he also escaped by scaling the perimeter fence in the compound to evade arrest which he blatantly denied.

Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula has shown that he has a legendary talent of evading police arrest when wanted over criminal charges which may be what he learnt from the “street” as he resides in the USA.

Reacting to the development, a chieftain of the community, who pleaded for anonymity for fear of being victimized by Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula’s armed gang wondered why a titled man like him will be exhibiting criminal expertise of running away from the security agencies instead of making himself available and respond to charges against him .

“This is totally awful because if what he is laying claim is genuine, why always on the run when called upon to defend himself?. This is unlike his opponent , Eze Emmanuel Ekwujuru Uzoho, the only community crowned Eze till date that is always available whenever needed by the security agencies to answer for any petition”.

“In fact, from the look of things, Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula should stop breaching public peace and leave what he is not due for . The gods of the land will definitely come after him . I have not seen where someone that claims to be a traditional ruler abandons his so-called throne on sighting of legitimate security agencies. Only a non genuine person that has criminal tendencies will do that. When you leave your throne and always abscond especially in the manner reported, abandoning your so-called kingdom, it speaks volume of your character and questions the legitimacy of your claim “, he added.

Similarly, the stakeholders from the community, Umuezeanoruo Eziama Autonomous Community have appealed to Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula to stop causing further commotion in the community in his quest to snatch the throne by all means.

They advised him to allow the law to take its toll on the matter as it is before the Supreme Court to decide instead of taking advantage of his deep pocket against the present community crowned traditional ruler.

The stakeholders described his high level of impatience to Court process and flagrant disobedience to the traditional process of making a king as uncalled for owing to the fact that in order to put in place his inordinate ambition, he has demonstrated extreme habits of desperation which have put the community in total chaos and wondered what a young man of his age will gain in setting his hometown on fire because he wants to be the Eze by all means.

Investigation had it that the controversial Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula, alongside others failed the Eze selection screening exercise based on the community’s constitution by not meeting up with the academic requirements. Instead of allowing peace to reign in the Community like others that were screened out did , Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula went to the High Court and lost the judgement.

Not satisfied, he appealed and got judgment from the Appeal Court. His opponent has long taken the matter to Supreme Court which is a superior Court but Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula,in his impatience refused to acknowledge the fact that statue quo should remain till the supreme Court gives judgement as he goes about parading himself as the Traditional Ruler without being coronated, no staff of office, no government recognition including the Imo State Council of Traditional rulers as he is not allowed to attend their meetings.

Rather , he set up a parallel Town Union government, all in efforts to destabilize the community and plunge it into total confusion.

Further investigation showed that the community is living in fear as Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula uses security agencies to harass, intimidate and molest whoever that tries to call him to order, those he labeled his enemies.

The community also used the opportunity to call on the Inspector General of Police to call him to order especially as he goes about with an illegal arm , shooting at will into the air in public occasions, driving fear further into the local populace in order to continue with his rogue statue as evidenced on 25th December, 2024 during a public event at Okorocha Traditional dance by Umunze Eziachi, Orlu LGA, Imo State, a neighboring community during when he was seen shooting gun sporadically after spraying Naira Notes on the dance (Naira Abuse, a criminal offence with not less than 6 months jail term). This evidence is confirmed by the Police authority as we speak.

The community equally called on the friends of Nze Emeka Andrew Obiefula to advise him properly on the need to respect the sacredness of the traditional institution in Igbo land.

They reminded him that Court does not do coronation of an Eze and at such he should exercise patience and wait for the outcome of the supreme Court judgment which will be followed by proper coronation instead of the archaic efforts of imposing himself on the people.
