POVERTY : A CURSE, DISEASE OR A SPONSORED PREDICAMENT?

POVERTY : A CURSE, DISEASE OR A SPONSORED PREDICAMENT? by Cookie Iwuoha

“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” – Albert Camus.
What made poverty a permanent state in Humanity, is poverty sponsored? will all mankind on earth ever be united in wealth. Why are few so rich that they acquire things they don’t need, most of it even serves no purpose than just for mere entertainment ,and the others are so poor they can’t afford food to eat talk more of shelter or medication for their health.

Is poverty a choice of the many, out of their laziness or inability of exploiting opportunities that are present, or are many so poor hustling every day because there are no options left, I have heard so much about nations that support their unemployed citizens with enough stipends to afford a shelter, and have met people that  have worked their way from nothing to affluence with sheer hard work and frugality, are all the able bodied poor people to be blamed for being poor? Or is there a system in place that prevents them from climbing the success ladder, my private investigation on this subject has led me to the belief  that capitalism is playing a part in advancing poverty, many  Non Governmental Organization who are putting up a fight against poverty blames capitalism partially for playing a part in impoverishing many and enriching a few, exploitative government policies that milk the masses for the benefit of a few corrupt leaders  who are at the helms of affairs are also another challenge, lack of good innovative ideas or policies to promote the lot of the poor in many nations governance system is also key, so actually for those who love to play the blame game their  seems to be people ,societies or institutions to blame for the poverty that we see around us.
Are we imprisoned economically by the selfish decisions our governments and political leaders make? The idea that a few should manage the resources of a nation is it truly the best? Is our vote truly our power? Or a ploy to make us feel counted or important in a system of governance that  our voice is hardly heard unless we tow the path of violence or civil demonstrations like strike?  Poverty is not just a physical state of lack but also an emotional, psychological and spiritual condition of  emptiness.
The factors promoting poverty in the current age or civilization to name a few is
1.       Ignorance
2.       The existence of Money ( money as a constant means of extraction.)
3.       3. The concept of total ownership
4.       4. Power (centralized  system of power and its twin brother called Corruption)
5.       5.unconscious imprisonment of lofty ideas via promotion of materialism
6.       6. Multi-National Corporations un-repaid debts to Nature and their rampant damage of natural sources of livelihood for communities.
7.       Exploitation of masses for profit via unfair exchange
8.       Greed of neo-colonialism

Like Guarab Chiber asked in his article “Germany ,Spain and Greece are neighbours. do they share their prosperity?
The US and Mexico are neighbours, would they ever share their prosperity ?
The idea of inclusive growth as a society. The idea of giving back to society as duty and not charity. The idea of more you give the more you earn. The idea of respecting humans for what they are and not how rich they are.”
Many in the world are not just poor because its God’s will, we will expose each of the above mentioned subjects contribution in trapping many from defeating the challenges in their society. stay hooked to ARISE AFRIKA and Hot matters column more on this issue next edition.

ARISE AFRIKA COMMENDS GOTNI

ARISE AFRIKA COMMENDS  GOTNI  FOR LEADERSHIP SUMMIT HELD AT OWERRI, EMERGING LEADERS CONFERENCE LAGOS

The Publisher of Arise Afrika Magazine and foremost leadership blogger , Mr Ikechukwu Anyanwu commends Dr Linus Okorie for putting up a Leadership Summit at Owerri to educate, equip and empower Imolites AND successful hosting of Emerging Leaders Conference in Lagos
We bring to you excerpts from  Summit held at Rockview Hotels Owerri;

LEADERSHIP CAPITAL BALANCE  by Linus Okorie
Leadership is not manipulation. It is not by force. If someone follows you without anything and you inspire them to achieve something, you are a leader. The leader is the man that makes things happen. A leader comes into a place and when he leaves, he wants to see the place transformed.  A leader inspires. The secret of becoming a global leader is to understand the word “globalization:
If you don’t say you are existing, nobody will know you are. To have a position does not mean you are a leader. To lead your life is the most important aspect of leadership. What gives leadership to you is the quality of development you give to yourself.
 Make yourself so valuable.

“Is there anything that I can do for you”  Invest your time. Every leader invests his time.
The speaker also threw more lights on the following:
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Vision .  Integrity.  Passion.  Innovation.  Courage .  Intellectual Capacity .  Inspirations
Globalization:explore technologies, marketing , researching that can be used to your advantage.
Understand and know how to use the atmosphere of networking for yourself. The more people you have in your business network. The better for it.
Mobilization: It is the responsibility of the leader to mobilize. The greatest resources in this country is not oil. It is in human capital.
Communication:You cannot be a good leader without being a good communicator. You must understand both verbal and nonverbal communication. In times of crises, what makes you succed is your ability to speak.
“Develop your leadership capacity . When you gain mastery and do,  that can make it happen for you”
With that the speaker suggested following books for the participants. And guess what you have the key to your success in this books. The white man would say if you want to hide anything from the black man hide it in that book. But we say  to Africa let’s Arise  and become readers. Readers are Leaders!!

Nigerian President Buhari seeks NASS approval for $30bn loan

NIGERIA -PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, sought the approval of the National Assembly for external borrowing plan of $29.960 billion to execute key infrastructure projects across the country between 2016 and 2018. The President, in separate letters to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also requested for approval to vire N180 billion of the N500 billion appropriated for Special Intervention Programme as in 2016 budget, to enable the government finance other key projects.

The two letters, titled, Request for Virement of Funds Appropriated for Special Intervention (Recurrent) and Special Intervention (Capital) for the funding of critical recurrent and capital items and Request for Approval of Federal Government 2016 – 2018 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan, were read on the floors of both chambers yesterday. According to him,” The total cost of the projects and programmes under the borrowing (rolling) plan is $29.960 billion, made up of proposed projects and programmes loan of $11.274 billion, Special National Infrastructure projects $10.686 billion, Euro bonds of $4.5 billion and Federal Government budget support of $3.5billion. “ The President, who also explained that the loan was very necessary, in view of the serious infrastructure deficit in the country, said: “Considering the huge infrastructure deficit currently being experienced in the country and the enormous financial resources required to fill the gap, in the face of dwindling resources and the inability of our annual budgetary provisions to bridge the deficit, it has become necessary to resort to prudent external borrowing to bridge the financing gap, which will largely be applied to key infrastructure projects, namely power, railway and road projects, among others.” He said the N180 billion virement would be moved from monies already appropriated for special intervention programmes, both recurrent and capital, for funding of critical recurrent and capital items. The President added that the request came up because of shortfalls in provisions for personnel costs; inadequate provision, ab initio, for some items like the amnesty programme; continuing requirements to sustain the war against insurgency; and depreciation of the Naira. The projects to be financed with the N180.839 billion include the Amnesty programme, National Youth Serve Corps, NYSC, and the Public Service Wage Adjustment, PSWA. President Buhari explained that external borrowing plan would be targeted at projects which cut across all sectors, with special emphasis on infrastructure, agriculture, health, education , water supply, among others. According to the letter which was read at the Senate by the Deputy President of Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session, the Amnesty Programme will get a total sum of N35 billion from the transfer. It added that the total recurrent expenditure requirement to be transferred was N166,630,886,954, while the capital expenditure requirement to be transferred was N14,208,367,476″ A breakdown of the specific areas the N180.9 billion would be transferred to showed that Public Service Wage Adjustment takes the lion share of N71,800,215,270; followed by the Amnesty Programme, which took N35billion while the mobilisation of corps members received N19,792,018,400. Others are: Foreign Missions which gulped N14,667,230,014; Operation Lafiya Dole takes N13,933,093,000; Nigerian Air Force takes N12,708,367,476; Internal Operations of the Armed Forces takes N5,205,930,270; Margin for Increase in Cost takes N2billion, while Presidential Initiative for the North East received N1.5billion. Also, Contingency, salary shortfall for Public Complaints Commission got N1.2billion each, even as Cadet Feeding of Police Academy, Kano, Augmentation of Meal subsidy for Unity Colleges received N932,400,000 and N900,000,000 respectively. On the need to make more funds available to the amnesty programme, the President said, “Only N20,000,000,000 (already fully released) was provided in the 2016 budget for the Niger Delta Amnesty Progr mme. “Consequently, the allowances to ex-militants have only been paid up to May 2016. This is creating a lot of restiveness and compounding the security challenge in the Niger Delta,” Buhari said. On NYSC funding, the President said: “The Provision for NYSC in the 2016 budget is inadequate to cater for the number of corpers to be mobilized this year. In fact, an additional N8.5billion is required to cover the backlog of 129, 469 corps members who are currently due for call-up but would otherwise be left out till next year due to funding constraints.” President who, also explained why the sum of N71.8 billion had to be transferred from the intervention programme, said: “Similarly, the provision for meal subsidy for the Unity Colleges is inadequate for the number of students in the schools. Also, there was no provision for feeding of cadets at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano. These situations are hampering the operations of the affected agencres. “The provision for Statutory Transfer to the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) was reduced to N2,000,000,000 in 2016 from N4,000,000,000 in 2015. Consequently, the agency is experiencing difficulty in paying salaries of its personnel as and when due. “Due to the devaluation of the Naira, the budgetary provisions for the foreign missions are no longer sufficient to cover all their costs. The provision for Presidential Initiative for the North East (N12,000,000,000) has a balance of less than N1.5bn, and there continue to be emerging challenges with the Internally Displaced Persons (lDPs) in the zone.” The letter reads in part:”In the course of implementing the 2016 Appropriation Act, several MDAs have presented issues pertaining to salary shortfalls, the settlement of part of which has led to the depletion of the Public Service Wage Adjustment (PSWA). This Vote, which had a provision of N33, 597,400,000, now has a balance of N2, 758,296,000. “The Committee on Salary Shortfalls, set up by the Honourable Minister of Finance, has come up with a figure of N41,875,983,020 as the amount required to settle salary shortfalls of non-lPPlS MDAs. Similarly, most of the lPPlS MDAs have already been notified by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) that they would soon be locked out of the IPPIS Platform as their Personnel Cost budgets would not cover salaries for the rest of the year. “The lPPlS Department in the OAGF has forwarded a figure of N20, 058,204,856 as the sum required to cover the shortfall in salaries of lPPlS MDAs. The Security-related lines in the Service Wide Vote, specifically Operations internal for the Armed Forces (N13billion) and Operation Lafiya Dole (N8billion) have all been totally released while the Nigerian Air Force needs about (N12,708,367,476) to cover the foreign exchange differentials in the procurement of its critical capabilities. “The Contingency Vote of N12billion has a balance of only N1,827,570,443. it is considered necessary to augment this vote in the light of frequently emerging contingencies. “Only N20,000,000,000 (already fully released) was provided in the 2016 budget for the Niger Delta Amnesty Progr mme. Consequently, the allowances to ex-militants have only been paid up to May 2016. This is creating a lot of restiveness and compounding the security challenge in the Niger Delta. “The Provision for NYSC in the 2016 budget is inadequate to cater for the number of corpers to be mobilized this year. The breakdown of the virement proposal shows that N71.8 billion is for public service wage adjustment, N35billion for Amnesty programme, N19.8billion for mobilization of remaining

MEN BEING IN ALIGNMENT WITH GOD BECAUSE OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITES AS MINISTERS, HUSBANDS, FATHERS-

MEN BEING IN ALIGNMENT WITH GOD BECAUSE OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES AS MINISTERS, HUSBANDS, FATHERS- Victor Nwaorgu

As a prelude into a proper exposition of the above subject, it has become imperative to know what the topic really signifies, to be in alignment with God in essence means maintaining the same balance with his spirit. Alignment has to do with one’s connection with God.  It goes beyond one’s behavior.

The almighty cares so much about it, he wants us his children to be in alignment with his will once we are united with the lord, we will adhere to all his instruction even when he requests from us to do the impossible.
When we realize our spiritual alignment, it will enlarge our life and multiply our effectiveness because it will take away from us all sense of doubt, feelings of inability to buffet the storms of life it will give us a new meaning of living.  Life will take on a whole new meaning, when we live in constant realization of our alignment with the lord.  The nearer we are to the lord the greater our strength.  There is no true success in ministry not until we connect with the most high, When we fail in aligning ourselves with the lord we will not be able to do anything.
Having  been saved  by grace , we are his chosen ones , we live by  the aid  of  the holy spirit, by faith .we  should seek  Gods  guidance and direction through his word   to perform well in the  various ministries where the lord has called us.  He has appointed teachers, preachers, prophets, singers, and evangelists. Without this connection, we simply drift away from God’s plan and purpose for us in life.

Many a time, we have all been guilty of being overly confident in our own abilities.  Our insensitivity  at  some points  overinflate  our  sense  of self – assurance  thus creating  a bridge  in  the flow of communication. We no longer seek to hear from God before any decision. In other cases many of us start in the right way, always seeking the guidance of the lord, but as we begin to develop a level of  comfort  that  the lord  is with us  we start  paying  less   attention  to  the guidance  of the  lord . we must  always  remember  who  it is  that  is  strong and mighty  –He  who makes  us  mighty , and seek his acknowledgement  always.

Every  married  man has  some specific  responsibilities to play in the life  of  his wife .remember , marriage is an institution  created  by God and  he  sets his rules. A man is to love his wife, when the scripture talks about love; it talks about sacrifice that you make for the betterment of someone else.

You can only measure love by your level of sacrifice and not by your satisfaction.  To say that a man loves his wife is to talk about the sacrifice that he makes for her. “Husbands love your wives even as also Christ loved the assembly and gave up himself for it”. (Ephesians 5: 25). To talk about love is to talk about a cross. To talk about love is to talk about a savior.  We have a savior in Christ and our wives ought to have a savior in us. We have a deliverer in Christ and our mates ought to have a deliverer in us.   When you talk of loving your wife, you talk about carrying a cross.  Jesus Christ did not die for us because we are loveable, Jesus died to make us loveable.

A man does not love his wife because she deserves to be loved; a man loves his wife in order to change her into someone loveable.   The scripture talked about Jacob s love for Rachel, so much that he worked for fourteen years in order to gain permission to marry her from her father (Genesis 29).  It is a hard price to pay, but a price of true love.  “But God commanded his love to us, that while we where yet sinners, Christ died for us”. (Romans 5:8).   Guess what?  If you love your wife you have to sanctify her, you are to take her from the level where she is to the level where you want her to be.

When she shows you her problem, you are to fix it.  You are the god of your home, what Jesus is to the church, you are to be to your wife.   Husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. Christ gave himself to his church. Just as the man works out to make his body look good, he is to work his wife out to look good as well. Make sure that she is strong, fulfilled, provided for and satisfied. The father is the head of the home. The home is where the physical, emotional and spiritual grace of a child is nurtured.

A father who is aligned with God has the ability to call forth the grace of God through Love, care, provision, guidance and advice.  A godly Father upholds the spiritual alter of the family, He sharpens and guides the child towards reaching the vision and purpose of his existence.    And now words to you parents don’t keep on scolding and nagging your children making them angry and resentful rather bring them up with the loving discipline the lord himself approves with suggestion and godly advice. (Eph 6:4).

The greatest gift a father can give to the child is love. Just like God our heavenly father loves us his children. A child who has the conviction  that he has a father  who loves  him will always  put  his trust in his father simply put , when affection is shown to a child it brings out the best in the child, the child will have the consciousness that he has  a shoulder  to cry and lean on , he has someone he can call a friend  who  he can  tell his fears , share his vision and aspirations with and also confide in.   Sure the rod of correction should not be spared but a father should also correct in love.

God is a merciful father who will always chastise and correct us in love whenever we go astray.  “If a child asks his father for bread, will he be given a stone? If he asks for dish will he be given snake?  Of course not! And if you men know how to give good gift to your children, won’t your heavenly father even more certainly give good gifts to those who ask him for them.” (Matthew 7:9-11).

Just like God, the primary function of a father is to provide for his children s need, Needs vary according to stages the need of your child when he is an infant may not be the same as when he is an adult. It can be physical, emotional, or a spiritual need.

A father should brace up to this task. The children are precious gifts which the lord has entrusted in your custody.  As a father you are to provide and take care of their everyday needs because surely as caretakers, one day we will stand to give account on how well we have been able to bring up these children in the fear of God.

The 2015 elections that brought a change in government, increased the positive surge in political consciousness of usually non-partisan youths and adult and must be effectively taken advantage of in propagating civic education in the populace and all the lectures presented an ample opportunity for soul search and reflections on the issues limiting the south east socio-political development and stratagems to conquer salutation of mediocrity in the zone.
The south east was chosen for discussion because of the occasional volatile demonstration and agitation for a sovereign state that has led to the loss of precious lives and huge economic losses and the organisers  in living to their promise to the people are using the  outcome of the lectures and discussion to analyze the situation, educate and inform its people especially the youth on the right direction to take as more demonstrations are expected in the near future.

08037512288
An  Illustrious son of Okigwe Zone  Ikechukwu Anyanwu….the publisher  of Arise Afrika Magazine has spoken volume of the capacity of  Arise Afrika in raising the beautiful continent of Africa one information at a time,
“We are beginning from our community, beloved Imo State and our nation. blazing a trail in the area of news update, leadership blogging,  reshape our society, recreate our ethical, cultural values.

As the race to occupy the Douglas house come 2019, we would play an active role to ensure that the people are well informed so as to make the right decisions.
At this time of economic recession, our people really want to be liberated from the untold hardships, hunger and sufferings and shackle of gimmicks which is characterized by self seeking and self enriching politicians who makes lots of promises to the people to gain their vote and only abandoned them.
He spoke about the Rescue Mission Government and gave the government some kudos, although more needs to be done for the people. He explained the word RESCUE to simply mean “the act of assisting to make sure that a person or situation is saved from a great danger. More especially when life is involved. Another word related to this word Rescue, this time around, the word redeem is more spiritual and often used by people or the most desired and admired aspect of being rescued or saved in the present situation. The person or situation seems more palatable and reassuring; this time around the person has a long lasting feeling of freedom and deliverance.
The Executive Governor of Imo State, HE Owelle Rochas Okorocha OON has really played a vital role as the driver of the Rescue mission in Imo State Government. For the record of truthfulness, the Imo situation before 2011 Election, necessitated the call for the Rescue mission and that was the expectation of Imo people based on the Prevailing circumstances in Imo state due to the dislike of Imo people, on the behaviour of the pilot of the Clean and Green Government of H.E. Ikedi Ohakim, that Govt, seemed not accepted by the people as that Ohakim lost the  integrity  and the cooperate Sanity of the Social Contract and respect for governed or Citizenry. Imo people came out, that gave birth to Rescue Mission .
We will simply  submit that Okorocha’s Rescue Government has recorded huge success and has made wonderful impart in the Annals of Imo State Politics based on innovation, infrastructural development, youth encouragement and empowerment more especially on free Education, functional city and raising the living standard of Imo People.
